In today’s “Circle Time,” Caroline and Sophie welcomed their friend Kim, who guided everyone in creating special thank you cards for loved ones, especially in light of Mother’s Day. Participants learned to draw a flower and add personal touches to their cards, while also enjoying a show and tell featuring colorful artwork from friends in Somaliland. The session encouraged creativity and gratitude, inviting everyone to share their own drawings in the future.
  1. Who can you make a special card for?
  2. What colors would you like to use to make your card pretty?
  3. How does making a card make you feel when you say thank you?

Welcome to Circle Time!

Hello friends! Welcome to “Circle Time.” I’m Caroline, and today I’m here with my friend Sophie. Hi Sophie!

Making a Special Card

Today, we have a fun and creative activity planned. Our friend Kim is going to show us how to make a special card. This card can be for anyone special in your life, like your parents, teachers, or friends. You can thank them for something they’ve done for you.

Let’s Meet Kim

Hi Kim, thanks for joining us!

Kim is here to help us draw thank you cards. Is there someone you’re thankful for? Great! You can make a card for them. Since Mother’s Day is coming up, Kim is making a card for her mom. But you can make yours for anyone you like.

Drawing a Thank You Card

If you want to follow along, you can print the template using the link below. You’ll also need some colors, crayons, or markers. Kim has already colored the letters using her favorite colors and shapes. Now, let’s fill the empty space with a drawing.

First, Kim draws a yellow circle. Can you guess what it is? Next, she adds a green line down to the ground. Any guesses? Finally, she adds half-circle shapes around the yellow shape. Yes, it’s a flower! Flowers are a great way to say thank you.

Kim adds red to the petals and little half circles inside them. Don’t forget the leaves! Leaves have lines down the middle, so Kim draws those too. She uses light green on one side and dark green on the other.

Since it’s a Mother’s Day card, Kim adds a tiny flower next to the big one. It’s called a forget-me-not. She repeats the same steps to draw it. Finally, she adds some clouds and a little yellow heart to the card.

Finishing Touches

There’s a space to add your name, so everyone knows who the card is from. Kim even draws some smiley faces in the flowers. Now, you have a card that says a big thank you!

Show and Tell

Today, we also have a special show and tell. Some friends from Somaliland shared their coloring pages with us. Ahmed, Mohammed, and Hassan sent us their colorful drawings. They used bright colors and creative patterns. It’s amazing to see their work!

If you’d like to share your drawings or videos with us, we’d love to see them too!

Goodbye for Now

Thank you for joining us today. We hope you have a fun and creative day. Maybe you can make a card or draw some characters to share with us. Goodbye for now from Caroline, Sophie, and the Khan Academy Kids team!

  1. Who is someone special in your life that you would like to make a thank you card for? Why are they special to you?
  2. Kim used her favorite colors and shapes to make her card. What are your favorite colors and shapes, and how would you use them to decorate your card?
  3. Have you ever given or received a thank you card before? How did it make you feel, and why do you think saying thank you is important?
  1. Nature Walk and Observation: Take a walk outside with an adult and look for different flowers and plants. Can you find a flower that looks like the one Kim drew? Try to notice the colors, shapes, and sizes of the flowers you see. Draw your favorite flower when you get back home and add it to your thank you card collection.

  2. Color Mixing Experiment: Gather some paints or colored water. Mix different colors together to see what new colors you can create. Try to make the colors Kim used in her card, like the light and dark greens for the leaves. Use your new colors to paint a picture or decorate another thank you card.

  3. Thank You Card Exchange: Organize a card exchange with your friends or family. Make a thank you card for someone special and give it to them. Ask them to make a card for someone else, and see how many cards you can create and share. Talk about how it feels to give and receive thank you cards.
