In this lesson, you learned how to create your own compass using simple materials like a sewing needle, aluminum foil, water, and a magnet. By magnetizing the needle and floating it on the water, you can observe how it aligns itself to point north, demonstrating the Earth’s magnetic properties. This hands-on activity not only teaches you about navigation but also the science behind how compasses work.
  1. What materials do you need to make your own compass?
  2. How does the needle know which way to point when you make your compass?
  3. Why is it important to use a compass when you are exploring?

How to Make Your Own Compass

Hey there! Today, we’re going to learn how to make a compass using some simple materials. A compass is a tool that helps you find your way by pointing north. People have used compasses for thousands of years to explore the world. Let’s find out how you can make one yourself!

What You Need

To make your own compass, you’ll need:

  • A sewing needle
  • A piece of aluminum foil
  • A clear container of water with a flat bottom
  • A magnet

Make sure you have a grownup to help you with this project!

Steps to Make a Compass

Here’s how you can make your compass:

  1. Carefully pick up the sewing needle and hold it by the end with the hole.
  2. Drag the magnet along the needle from the hole end to the pointy end. Do this about 15 to 20 times, always in the same direction.
  3. Fold the aluminum foil into a small boat shape and poke the needle through it. Be careful and ask a grownup for help!
  4. Gently float the foil on the water in your container.
  5. Watch as the needle turns and points north!

How Does It Work?

The reason your compass works is because the needle becomes a magnet when you rub it with another magnet. Magnets have two ends, called poles: a north pole and a south pole. The Earth is like a giant magnet with its own magnetic poles. The Earth’s magnetic poles pull on the poles of your needle, making it point north.

Even though it might seem confusing, the Earth’s north magnetic pole is actually in the south, and its south magnetic pole is in the north. This is why the north pole of your needle points north!

Why Use a Compass?

Using a compass can help you find your way without getting lost. It’s a handy tool for exploring and taking shortcuts. Now that you know how to make one, you can try it out next time you’re on an adventure!

  • Have you ever used a compass before, or seen someone use one? What do you think it would be like to use a compass on an adventure?
  • Why do you think it’s important for explorers to have tools like a compass? Can you think of other tools that might be helpful when exploring?
  • Imagine you are going on a treasure hunt. How would making your own compass help you find the treasure? What other things would you bring with you?
  1. Magnet Hunt: Go on a magnet hunt around your house or classroom! Find different objects and guess if they are magnetic or not. Use a magnet to test your guesses. Make a list of the items that are magnetic and those that are not. Discuss why you think some objects are magnetic while others are not.

  2. Compass Adventure: Use your homemade compass to go on a mini adventure! Choose a starting point and use your compass to find north. Once you know which way is north, try to find other directions like south, east, and west. Draw a simple map of your adventure, marking the directions you traveled.

  3. Question Time: Think about these questions and discuss them with a friend or family member:

    • Why do you think explorers in the past needed compasses?
    • How do you think life would be different if compasses were never invented?
    • Can you think of other tools that help us find our way? How are they similar or different from a compass?
