In this lesson, Teacher Mike introduces students to various measuring tools, including rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, plastic tape measures, and metal tape measures, explaining their specific uses for measuring different objects. Students learn to select the appropriate tool based on the size and shape of the item being measured, such as using a ruler for a nail, a plastic tape measure for a soccer ball, a meter stick for a door, and a metal tape measure for a house. The lesson emphasizes the importance of choosing the right measuring tool for accurate results.
  1. What is a ruler used for?
  2. Which measuring tool would you use to measure a soccer ball?
  3. Why do we need different tools to measure different things?

Welcome to the World of Measuring Tools!

Hello, everyone! Welcome to Kids Academy. I’m Teacher Mike, and today we’re going to have fun learning about different measuring tools. We’ll find out what these tools are and how to use them. Then, we’ll look at some objects and pick the right tool to measure them. Let’s jump right in!

The Ruler

First up is the ruler. A ruler is 12 inches long and is perfect for measuring small things. When you use a ruler, make sure the object is smaller than the ruler so you can measure it correctly.

The Yardstick and Meter Stick

Next, we have the yardstick and the meter stick. A yardstick is three feet long, and a meter stick is about the same length. These are great for measuring bigger things, like a table.

The Plastic Tape Measure

Now, let’s talk about the plastic tape measure. This tool is super cool because it can measure both straight and curvy objects. It’s perfect for measuring things that aren’t straight, like a round ball.

The Metal Tape Measure

Lastly, we have the metal tape measure. This tool can be really long, from 50 to 200 feet! It’s great for measuring big things like houses and cars. It’s very handy for measuring things that other tools can’t.

Let’s Measure Some Objects!

Now, let’s help Steve measure different things in his house and choose the best tool for each one.

Measuring a Nail

First, we have a nail. Should we use a ruler or a metal tape measure? A nail is only a few inches long, so the best tool is a ruler. Just one ruler is enough to measure a nail.

Measuring a Soccer Ball

Next, let’s measure a soccer ball. To measure around it, we should use the plastic tape measure because it can wrap around curvy or round objects. A ruler wouldn’t work well here because the ball isn’t straight.

Measuring a Door

Now, let’s measure a door. This door is pretty big, so a ruler won’t be enough. We would need many rulers to measure it. But with one meter stick, we can measure the door easily.

Measuring a House

Finally, let’s measure a house. If we used a ruler, we’d need a lot of them! But with a metal tape measure, we can measure the whole house. So, the metal tape measure is the right choice.

Thanks for joining me, everyone! I hope you had fun learning about measuring tools. See you next time! Don’t forget to subscribe to our channel for more fun videos, and check out our apps in the comments below.

  • What are some things around your home that you think you could measure with a ruler? Why do you think a ruler would be the best tool for those items?
  • Can you think of something big, like a piece of furniture or a room, that you might need a yardstick or meter stick to measure? How would you use it?
  • Have you ever seen someone use a tape measure? What were they measuring, and why do you think they chose that tool instead of a ruler?
  1. Measuring Hunt: Go on a measuring hunt around your home or classroom! Find three objects: one small, one medium, and one large. Decide which measuring tool you would use for each object. For example, you might use a ruler for a pencil, a meter stick for a desk, and a plastic tape measure for a round cushion. Share your findings with a friend or family member and explain why you chose each tool.

  2. Create Your Own Measuring Tool: Use paper, cardboard, or any other materials you have at home to create your own measuring tool. It could be a mini ruler, a paper tape measure, or even a yardstick. Once you’ve made your tool, try measuring different objects with it. How accurate is your tool compared to a real one? What would you change to make it better?

  3. Question Time: Think about these questions and discuss them with your classmates or family:

    • Why do you think different measuring tools are needed for different objects?
    • Can you think of a situation where you might need to use more than one measuring tool? What would you measure and why?
    • How do you think people measured things before these tools were invented?

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

Welcome to Kids Academy! Hello boys and girls, this is Teacher Mike, and today I’d like to talk to you about different measuring tools. First, we’re going to review what these measuring tools are and how we can use them appropriately. Then, we’re going to look at some objects and choose the correct tool to measure each object. Let’s get started right away!

The first tool I’d like to talk to you about is the ruler. A ruler is 12 inches long and is used to measure smaller objects. When we use the ruler, we want to make sure that the objects we measure are smaller than the ruler so that we can measure them accurately.

The next tool I’d like to discuss is a yardstick or a meter stick. A yardstick is exactly three feet long, and a meter stick is about three feet long as well. We can use a meter stick and a yardstick in a similar way. They are great for measuring larger items, like a table.

Next, let’s talk about a plastic tape measure. A plastic tape measure is really cool because you can use it to measure not just straight objects, but also curvy ones. This makes it a unique measuring tool that can help measure objects that aren’t perfectly shaped.

The last measuring tool I’d like to teach you about is a metal tape measure. A metal tape measure can be from 50 to 200 feet long, which means you can measure larger items like houses and cars. It’s very useful for measuring things that other tools can’t.

Now, let’s read the directions for our worksheet and get started! We will help Steve measure different things in his house and check the most suitable tool for each measurement.

First, we have a nail, and our two choices for measurement are a ruler or a metal tape measure. A nail is only a few inches long, so the best tool to measure a nail is, in fact, a ruler. We would only need one ruler to measure a nail, which makes this the right choice.

The next object we want to look at is a soccer ball. To measure around the soccer ball, we should use the plastic tape measure because it can help us measure curvy or round objects. A ruler would not be appropriate for this because there is no straight line to measure on a soccer ball.

Next, we want to measure a door. This door is pretty big, so a ruler won’t be enough. We would need multiple rulers to measure this door. However, with one meter stick, we might be able to measure it, so let’s choose the meter stick.

Finally, we have a house. If I were to measure this house using a ruler, I would need a lot of rulers. But if I use one metal tape measure, I might be able to measure the whole house. So, the metal tape measure is the appropriate choice here.

Thanks for watching, boys and girls! I hope you learned a little bit about selecting the correct measurement tool. We’ll see you next time! Subscribe to our channel to stay updated on new videos, and find links to our apps in the comments below.
