Meet the Digital Citizens: Guts

Hello, Digital Citizens!

My name is Guts, and I’m here to help you learn how to stay safe both in the real world and online. I always listen to my instincts, which means I pay attention to how I feel to make sure I’m safe. Today, I’m waiting at my bus stop to go to school, and I want to share some tips with you!

Staying Safe on the Way to School

When I leave my house, I always follow three important rules to stay safe:

1. Ask for Permission

Before I go anywhere, I ask my parents or guardians if it’s okay. This way, they know where I am and can keep me safe.

2. Talk to People I Know

I only talk to people I know, like my friends and family. This helps me stay safe because I know I can trust them.

3. Stick to Streets I Know

I always walk on streets that are familiar to me. This way, I don’t get lost and I know the safest routes to take.

Staying Safe Online

Going online is a lot like going to the bus stop. I need to be careful and follow some rules to stay safe:

1. Ask for Permission

Before I use the internet, I ask my parents or guardians if it’s okay. They help me choose safe websites and apps.

2. Talk to People I Know

I only chat with people I know online, just like in real life. This keeps me safe from strangers.

3. Stick to Trusted Websites and Apps

I only visit websites and use apps that my parents and I trust. This helps me avoid unsafe places online.

Trust Your Instincts

My parents always remind me to trust my instincts. If something doesn’t feel right or safe, I should step away and ask for help. Remember, it’s always okay to ask for help if you’re unsure about something.

Question for You!

Hey, Guts! The bus is arriving, so I have to go. But before I leave, I want to ask you, digital citizens: how do YOU stay safe online?

  • Can you think of a time when you had to ask for permission before doing something? Why do you think it’s important to ask for permission?
  • Have you ever felt unsure about talking to someone you don’t know? What did you do, and how did it make you feel?
  • What are some ways you can tell if a website or app is safe to use? Who can you ask for help if you’re not sure?
  1. Safety Role-Play: Gather your friends or family and act out different scenarios where you need to make safe choices. For example, pretend you are at a bus stop and someone you don’t know talks to you. What should you do? Discuss the best actions to take and why they are important. This will help you practice trusting your instincts and making safe decisions.

  2. Create a Safety Map: Draw a map of your neighborhood or the route you take to school. Mark the streets you know well and add symbols for safe places, like your home or a friend’s house. Share your map with your family and talk about why it’s important to stick to familiar streets. This activity will help you visualize and remember the safest routes.

  3. Online Safety Checklist: With the help of a parent or guardian, create a checklist of safe online practices. Include things like asking for permission before using the internet, only talking to people you know, and visiting trusted websites. Use this checklist every time you go online to remind yourself of the safety rules. Discuss with your family why each rule is important and how it keeps you safe.
