In this lesson, children learn about subtraction through a fun story involving Kate and Nate and their garden of plants. They start with 10 plants, but after 7 are stomped on, they practice counting to find that 3 plants remain. The lesson emphasizes that math can be enjoyable and encourages kids to apply similar counting techniques with everyday objects.
  1. How many plants did we start with in the garden?
  2. If 7 plants got stomped, how many plants are left?
  3. Can you think of something else you can count, like your toys or snacks?

Meet the Math Facts with Kate & Nate – The Plants

Let’s Learn with Kate and Nate!

Hi there! Are you ready to have some fun with Kate and Nate? Today, we’re going to learn about numbers using plants. Let’s see what happens!

Counting the Plants

Once upon a time, there were 10 plants in a garden. They were so green and happy!

Oh No! Stomping Time!

Uh-oh! Someone stomped on 7 plants. Oh dear, that’s not good for the plants!

How Many Plants Are Left?

Let’s count how many plants are still standing. If we had 10 plants and 7 got stomped, how many are left? Let’s do the math:

10 minus 7 equals 3

So, there are 3 plants left in the garden. Hooray for the plants that are still standing!

Math is Fun!

Wasn’t that fun? We learned how to subtract numbers by counting plants. You can try this with your toys or snacks too!

Join the Fun!

Don’t forget to join Kate and Nate next time for more exciting math adventures. See you soon!

  • Can you think of a time when you had to count something, like toys or snacks? How did you do it, and was it fun?
  • What do you think would happen if we planted more plants in the garden? How many would we have if we added 5 more to the 3 that are left?
  • Have you ever helped take care of plants or a garden? What did you do, and how did it make you feel?
  1. Plant Counting Adventure: Go on a mini adventure in your backyard or a nearby park with a grown-up. Count the number of different plants or flowers you see. Try to find at least 10 different ones. How many can you count? If you find 10 and then see 3 more, how many do you have in total? Use your fingers to help you add them up!

  2. Subtraction Snack Time: Use your favorite snack, like crackers or fruit pieces, to practice subtraction. Start with 10 pieces. Pretend that 7 pieces are “stomped” and eat them. How many pieces are left? Share your answer with a friend or family member. You can try this with different numbers too!

  3. Draw and Tell: Draw a picture of a garden with 10 plants. Then, draw 7 of them being stomped or crossed out. How many plants are still standing? Share your drawing with someone and explain what happened to the plants. Can you think of a story about how the plants got stomped?
