In this lesson, students join Kate and Nate on an adventure in The Swamp to learn about subtraction through counting lily pads. They start with six lily pads, and after three disappear, they practice determining how many are left, reinforcing the concept of subtraction as six minus three equals three. The lesson encourages interactive participation and continued practice of math skills in a fun and engaging way.
  1. How many lily pads were there at the start?
  2. If some lily pads go away, what do we call that in math?
  3. Can you count how many lily pads are left after some disappear?

Meet the Math Facts with Kate & Nate – The Swamp

Welcome to a fun adventure with Kate and Nate! Today, we are going to learn about math in a magical place called The Swamp.

Counting Lily Pads

Imagine there are six lily pads floating on the water. Lily pads are those big green leaves that frogs love to sit on!

Some Lily Pads Disappear

Oh no! Three of the lily pads have disappeared. Can you count how many are left?

Let’s see: 1, 2, 3. There are three lily pads left!

Math Magic: Subtraction

When we take away three lily pads from six, we have three left. This is called subtraction. We can say it like this: six minus three equals three.

Let’s Practice Together!

Now it’s your turn! If there are five lily pads and two disappear, how many are left? Let’s count together: 1, 2, 3. Great job! There are three lily pads left.

Join the Fun!

Keep practicing your math skills with Kate and Nate. There’s always something new and exciting to learn!

Don’t forget to come back for more fun adventures. See you next time!

  • Have you ever seen a real lily pad or a frog sitting on one? What other animals do you think might like to visit a swamp?
  • Can you think of a time when you had to share something with friends or family, like toys or snacks? How did you decide how many each person would get?
  • What other things can you count or subtract in your daily life, like toys, books, or steps? Can you come up with your own subtraction story?
  1. Lily Pad Hop: Create a small pond using blue construction paper and cut out lily pads from green paper. Write numbers on each lily pad. Ask the children to hop from one lily pad to another, counting aloud as they go. Then, remove a few lily pads and ask them to count how many are left. This will help them understand subtraction in a fun and physical way.

  2. Frog and Fly Game: Use toy frogs and flies (or make them from paper) to practice subtraction. Start with a certain number of flies and have the frog “eat” some. Ask the children to count how many flies are left. Encourage them to say the subtraction sentence out loud, like “Five flies minus two flies equals three flies.”

  3. Subtraction Story Time: Ask the children to create their own subtraction story using toys or drawings. For example, they can draw a picture of a pond with lily pads and frogs, then tell a story about how some lily pads disappear. Encourage them to share their story with the class, explaining the subtraction they used.
