Fun Activities with Blends

You can practice your blends by making a club about phonics. Swap books with your friends and try to spell words. You can make a small craft, glue treasures, and even cook! Don’t forget to bring a snack and something to drink. You can ask great questions and have time to think.

It’s time to go now. Grab your scarf and your hats, spring from your stool, and leap over the mat. The end! Yay! You did it!

  • Can you think of other words that start with the same blends we learned today? Maybe you can find some in your favorite storybook or around your home!
  • Have you ever played a game or done an activity where you used words with blends? What was it, and which blends did you use?
  • Imagine you are creating a new word using any of the blends we learned. What would your new word be, and what would it mean?
  1. Blend Hunt: Go on a blend hunt around your home or classroom! Look for objects that have names with blends. For example, find a plate for the “pl” blend or a flag for the “fl” blend. Make a list of all the items you find and share them with your friends. Can you find at least one item for each blend?
  2. Blend Art: Create a piece of art using words with blends. Draw a picture and label it with words that have blends. For example, draw a tree with a trunk and branches and label them. Use as many blend words as you can in your artwork. Display your art and explain the blends you used to your classmates.
  3. Blend Storytime: Make up a short story using at least five words with blends. For example, “Once upon a time, a prince went on a journey to find a glowing star in the sky.” Share your story with a friend or family member and see if they can spot all the blend words. Can you come up with a story that includes a word from each blend group?
