Meet the Phonics Blends – “Meet the Blends” Easy Reader Story

Alphabets Sounds Video

share us on:

In this lesson, students are introduced to phonics blends, which occur when two letters combine to create a new sound, like “bl” in “blue.” The lesson encourages fun and interactive ways to practice blends, such as forming a phonics club, engaging in crafts, and hosting a blends party to reinforce learning. By the end, students are motivated to continue practicing and become proficient in recognizing and using blends in their reading.
  1. What sound do you hear when “b” and “l” come together?
  2. Can you think of a word that has a blend in it?
  3. What fun things can you do to practice your blends with friends?

Meet the Phonics Blends

Welcome to the world of phonics blends! Learning to read is like going on an adventure, and blends are your special tools to help you along the way. Let’s have some fun as we discover how blends work!

What Are Blends?

Blends are when two letters come together to make a new sound. It’s like when two friends team up to do something amazing! For example, when “b” and “l” come together, they make the sound “bl” like in the word “blue.”

Fun Ways to Practice Blends

There are lots of fun ways to practice your blends. You can start a phonics club with your friends where you swap books and try to spell new words together. You can also make crafts, like cutting out letters and gluing them to make words with blends.

Activities to Try
  • Flip through a book and find words with blends.
  • Make a small craft using letters to create blend words.
  • Cook up a fun snack and talk about the blends in the recipe.

Let’s Have a Blends Party!

When you practice blends, you can have a little party! Bring a snack and something to drink. Ask each other questions about the blends you find and take time to think about how they sound in different words.

Time to Go!

When it’s time to leave, grab your scarf and hat. Jump up from your seat and leap over the mat. You’ve done a great job learning about blends today! Yay, you did it!

Keep practicing, and soon you’ll be a blend expert. Happy reading!

  • Can you think of any words that have blends in them, like “bl” in “blue”? What other blends can you find in words around you?
  • Have you ever teamed up with a friend to do something fun or solve a problem? How is that similar to how blends work together to make new sounds?
  • When you hear a blend in a word, does it remind you of anything else, like a sound or a feeling? Can you share an example?
  1. Blend Hunt at Home: Go on a blend hunt around your house! Look for items that have blend sounds in their names. For example, find a “blanket” for the “bl” blend or a “clock” for the “cl” blend. Make a list of all the items you find and share them with your family. Can you think of other words with the same blends?

  2. Blend Sound Garden: Create a “Blend Sound Garden” using paper flowers. Write different blends on each flower, like “fl,” “gr,” or “st.” Plant your flowers in a pretend garden (you can use a box or a corner of your room). As you “water” each flower, say a word that starts with that blend. How many words can you think of for each blend?

  3. Blend Detective: Become a blend detective! Listen carefully to conversations around you or during storytime. Every time you hear a blend, make a note of it. At the end of the day, share your list with a friend or family member. Which blend did you hear the most? Can you use those blends to make up a fun story?
