Meet the Shapes

Let’s have fun learning about shapes! Shapes are everywhere around us, and they can be lots of fun to find and play with. Let’s meet some of these friendly shapes together!

Circle

A circle is round like a ball. It has no corners. Can you find something that looks like a circle? Maybe a clock or a plate?

Square

A square has four sides that are all the same length. It looks like a box. Can you spot a square? How about a window or a book?

Triangle

A triangle has three sides. It looks like a slice of pizza or a mountain. Can you find a triangle around you?

Rectangle

A rectangle has four sides, just like a square, but two sides are longer. It looks like a door or a piece of paper. Can you see a rectangle?

Oval

An oval is like a stretched-out circle. It looks like an egg or a balloon. Can you find something shaped like an oval?

Diamond

A diamond looks like a kite. It has four sides, but they are not all the same length. Can you find a diamond shape?

Octagon

An octagon has eight sides. It looks like a stop sign. Can you count the sides of an octagon?

Star

A star has points, just like the stars you see in the sky at night. Can you draw a star?

Let’s Play a Shape Game!

Now that we know our shapes, let’s play a game! Look around your room and see how many shapes you can find. Can you find a circle, a square, and a triangle? How about a rectangle or an oval?

Shapes are so much fun to learn about and find. Keep looking for shapes everywhere you go, and soon you’ll be a shape expert!

  • Can you think of a time when you found a shape in a surprising place? What shape was it and where did you find it?
  • How do you think shapes help us in our everyday lives? Can you think of something you use every day that has a special shape?
  • If you could create a new shape, what would it look like? How many sides would it have, and what would you name it?
  1. Shape Hunt Adventure: Go on a shape hunt around your home or classroom. Take a piece of paper and draw a table with columns for each shape: Circle, Square, Triangle, Rectangle, Oval, Diamond, Octagon, and Star. As you find objects that match each shape, draw a small picture of the object in the correct column. How many different shapes can you find?

  2. Shape Art Collage: Gather some old magazines, newspapers, or colored paper. Cut out different shapes you find or create your own by cutting the paper into circles, squares, triangles, etc. Use these shapes to create a fun collage on a large piece of paper. What kind of picture can you make using only shapes?

  3. Shape Story Time: Imagine a story where each character is a different shape. What adventures might a circle, square, and triangle go on together? Draw a picture of your story and share it with a friend or family member. What shapes are the main characters, and what shapes do they see on their adventure?
