Meet the Shapes

Hey there! Let’s have some fun learning about shapes. Shapes are everywhere around us, and they come in all sorts of sizes and colors. Let’s meet some of these amazing shapes together!

Rectangle

A rectangle looks like a door or a book. It has four sides, and the sides across from each other are the same length. Can you find something shaped like a rectangle around you?

Diamond

A diamond shape looks like a kite flying in the sky. It has four sides too, but they are all slanted. Try drawing a diamond in the air with your finger!

Triangle

A triangle has three sides. It looks like a slice of pizza or a mountain. Can you count the three sides of a triangle with me?

Square

A square is special because all four of its sides are the same length. It looks like a box or a window. Let’s find a square shape together!

Octagon

An octagon has eight sides. It looks like a stop sign you see on the road. Can you count to eight with me as we look at an octagon?

Circle

A circle is round like a ball or a clock. It doesn’t have any corners. Let’s spin around like a circle!

Star

A star has points, just like the stars you see in the night sky. Can you twinkle your fingers like a star?

Oval

An oval looks like an egg or a balloon. It’s a bit like a circle but stretched out. Can you find something shaped like an oval?

Let’s Play!

Now that we know our shapes, let’s play a game! Look around your room and see how many shapes you can find. Is there a rectangle or a circle? Maybe even a star! Shapes are so much fun to find and learn about.

Great job meeting all these shapes! Keep looking for them everywhere you go. Shapes make the world a colorful and exciting place!

  • Can you think of a time when you used a shape to help you do something, like drawing or building? What shape was it, and how did it help you?
  • Look around your room or outside. What is the most interesting shape you can find, and why do you think it’s interesting?
  • If you could create a new shape, what would it look like? How many sides would it have, and what would you name it?
  1. Shape Hunt Adventure: Go on a shape hunt around your home or classroom. Can you find objects that match each shape we learned about? Look for rectangles, diamonds, triangles, squares, octagons, circles, stars, and ovals. Draw a picture of each object you find and label it with the shape name. Share your drawings with a friend and see if they found similar shapes!

  2. Shape Creation Station: Use playdough or clay to create each of the shapes we talked about. Can you make a rectangle, a diamond, a triangle, a square, an octagon, a circle, a star, and an oval? Once you’ve made your shapes, arrange them to create a fun picture or pattern. What can you make using all these shapes together?

  3. Shape Story Time: Imagine a story where each character is a different shape. What adventures do they go on? For example, maybe the triangle is climbing a mountain, and the circle is rolling down a hill. Draw a picture of your story and tell it to your family or friends. What happens to the shapes in your story?
