Meet the Shapes – Octagon

share us on:

In today’s lesson, we explored the octagon, a shape with eight sides and eight corners, and learned to count to eight together. We discovered that octagons can be found in everyday objects like stop signs and even had fun drawing our own octagons and singing a catchy song about them. The lesson encouraged students to keep looking for octagons in their surroundings, reinforcing the idea that shapes are all around us.
  1. How many sides does an octagon have?
  2. Can you find something in your house that looks like an octagon?
  3. What fun things can we do with an octagon shape?

Meet the Shapes – Octagon

Hello, Little Learners!

Today, we are going to learn about a special shape called an octagon. Are you ready to have some fun? Let’s go!

What is an Octagon?

An octagon is a shape that has eight sides and eight corners. Can you count to eight? Let’s try it together: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight! Great job!

Where Can We Find Octagons?

Octagons are all around us! Have you ever seen a stop sign? A stop sign is shaped like an octagon. Next time you see one, count the sides and see if you can find all eight!

Let’s Draw an Octagon!

Grab a piece of paper and a crayon. Let’s draw an octagon together. Start by drawing a line, then another, and keep going until you have eight sides. Wow, look at your amazing octagon!

Octagon Song

Let’s sing a fun song to remember the octagon. Sing along with me:

Octagon, octagon, you have eight sides,
Octagon, octagon, you are so wide!
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight,
Octagon, octagon, you’re really great!

Keep Exploring!

Now that you know about octagons, see if you can find more octagon shapes around your home or outside. Remember, learning is fun, and shapes are everywhere!

Goodbye for Now!

Thanks for learning about octagons with me today. Keep practicing, and soon you’ll be a shape expert. See you next time!

  • Can you think of any other places where you might see an octagon, besides a stop sign? Maybe in your house or at the park?
  • Why do you think stop signs are shaped like octagons? How does having eight sides make them special or important?
  • When you drew your octagon, did you find it easy or tricky to make all eight sides? What other shapes do you like to draw, and why?
  1. Octagon Hunt: Go on an octagon hunt around your home or classroom. Look for objects that have the shape of an octagon, like a stop sign, a clock, or a tile. Count the sides to make sure they have eight. Can you find at least three octagons? Share what you found with a friend or family member!

  2. Octagon Art: Create an octagon collage! Cut out octagon shapes from colored paper or magazines. Arrange and glue them onto a larger piece of paper to make a colorful octagon art piece. How many different octagons can you fit on your paper?

  3. Shape Story: Imagine you are an octagon living in a world of shapes. What adventures would you have? Draw a picture of your octagon character and tell a story about its day. Does it meet other shapes? What fun things do they do together?
