Meet the Shapes – “Rectangle”

What is a Rectangle?

Hi there! Today, we are going to learn about a special shape called a rectangle. A rectangle is a shape that has four sides. It looks like a long box or a door!

Rectangle’s Sides

A rectangle has two long sides and two short sides. The long sides are the same length, and the short sides are the same length too. Can you find something around you that looks like a rectangle?

Where Can We Find Rectangles?

Rectangles are everywhere! You can see them in books, windows, and even on your tablet or TV screen. Next time you go outside, try to spot rectangles in buildings or on signs.

Fun Rectangle Activity

Let’s play a game! Look around your room and find as many rectangles as you can. Count them and see how many you can find. Maybe you can draw a rectangle on a piece of paper too!

Sing Along with the Rectangle Song

Let’s sing a fun song about rectangles! You can clap your hands and sing: “Rectangle, rectangle, with four sides, two are long, two are short, rectangle, rectangle, you’re so fun!”

Keep Exploring Shapes

Learning about shapes is so much fun! Keep looking for rectangles and other shapes like circles and triangles. Shapes help us understand the world around us.

Enjoy More Learning

If you want to learn more about shapes and have fun, ask a grown-up to help you find videos and songs about shapes. Keep exploring and have a great time!

  • Can you think of a time when you saw a rectangle outside your home? What was it, and where did you see it?
  • Why do you think rectangles are used in so many things like books and windows? How do you think it helps us?
  • If you could make a new object shaped like a rectangle, what would it be? How would you use it?
  1. Rectangle Hunt: Go on a rectangle hunt around your home or classroom. Take a piece of paper and draw a rectangle every time you find one. How many different rectangles can you find? Try to find at least five different rectangles and share your findings with a friend or family member.

  2. Build a Rectangle: Use building blocks, sticks, or even straws to create your own rectangle. Make sure two sides are long and two sides are short. Once you build your rectangle, measure the sides with a ruler or a piece of string to see if the opposite sides are equal in length. Can you make a bigger or smaller rectangle?

  3. Rectangle Art: Create a piece of art using rectangles. Cut out rectangles of different sizes and colors from paper. Arrange them on a larger piece of paper to make a picture or pattern. What can you create using only rectangles? Share your artwork with your class or family.
