share us on:

In the lesson “Meet the Sight Words,” students engage with four short stories that introduce and reinforce common sight words through relatable themes such as playing in a band, caring for pets, sharing gifts, and playing with dogs. Each story encourages interaction and connection, making learning enjoyable while helping students recognize and use essential vocabulary in context. The lesson concludes with a positive affirmation, inviting students to continue their learning journey.
  1. What instrument did the friend say you can play in the band?
  2. What color is one of the dogs in the story?
  3. What can you use to play with the dog, like in the story?

Meet the Sight Words

Story 1: Playing in the Band

Guess what? I have a drum! My friend said the flute is for you to play. We can make music together in the band. It’s so much fun!

Story 2: My Dogs

Have you seen my dogs? One of them is white, but her paws are black. They love to cuddle with me when I go to sleep. They sleep on my bed. Do you have pets too?

Story 3: The Gifts

Look at all the gifts! There’s a ball for her and a bat for him. Up there by the box, we have some tape or glue. We can write words from all of us. This is going to be fun!

Story 4: Playing with the Dog

Hey, you did it! I came down to see what you were doing. I saw your little dog playing with you. If you use this stick, she can play just like my dog does. You can play with her even when I’m not here.

The End!

Yay, you did it! Wasn’t that fun? Let’s play again soon!

  • What kind of music would you like to play if you were in a band, and why? Do you have a favorite instrument?
  • Do you have any pets at home, or do you know someone who does? What do you like to do with them, or what would you like to do if you had a pet?
  • Have you ever given or received a special gift? What was it, and how did it make you feel?
  1. Make Your Own Band: Gather some household items like pots, pans, or empty containers to create your own musical instruments. Try playing along with your favorite song or make up your own tune. Can you make a rhythm with your “drum”? What other sounds can you create? Share your music with your family and see if they can join in with their own instruments!

  2. Pet Observation Journal: If you have pets, spend some time observing them. What do they do when they are happy? How do they play? Draw a picture of your pet and write a few words about what you see. If you don’t have a pet, imagine what kind of pet you would like and draw a picture of it. What would you name it? How would you play with it?

  3. Gift Wrapping Fun: Pretend you are wrapping gifts for your friends or family. Use paper, tape, or even fabric to wrap up small toys or objects. Can you write a special note to go with your gift? Think about what makes a gift special. Is it the wrapping, the gift itself, or the thought behind it?

Here’s a sanitized version of the provided YouTube transcript:

I have a drum. He said that the flute is for you to play. You and I will play in the band; it is a lot of fun. My dogs—did you see my dogs? She is white, but her paws are black. He had his hat on; it was blue. They like to cuddle with me as we go to sleep. They are on my bed. I didn’t get the gifts. Look at the gifts! This one is for her; it is a ball. The bat is for him. Up there by the box is some tape or glue. I can write the words from all of us. This will be fun! Hey, you did it! The stick—I came down to see what you were up to. I could see that your little dog was out with you. If you use this, she can play like my dog plays. I do not have to be out here when you play with this; you could use it when I am not here.

I will see you when your dog is up. The end! Yay, you did it!
