Mixing Colors!

Alphabets Sounds Video

share us on:

In today’s lesson, we explored the vibrant world of colors through painting and experimentation. We learned how to create new colors by mixing primary colors—red, yellow, and blue—and discovered that combining these colors can yield exciting results like green, orange, and purple. The lesson encourages creativity and experimentation, inviting participants to share their colorful creations and experiences.
  1. What are the three primary colors we learned about in the article?
  2. Can you think of a new color you would like to make by mixing two colors together?
  3. Why is it fun to experiment with colors when you are painting?

Discovering the Magic of Colors!

Hey there! Today, we’re going to have some fun with colors. Squeaks and I are making pictures, and I’m painting a picture of Squeaks. Squeaks is painting something beautiful, too! The world is full of amazing colors, and you can find them everywhere around you. How many colors can you name?

Creating New Colors

When I paint, I love using all the colors I have. But sometimes, I want even more colors! Have you ever tried making a new color? You can do it! Painting is all about using your imagination to create new things. When you mix colors, you’re experimenting, just like a scientist!

Let’s Do a Color Experiment!

First, ask a grown-up to help you. Find a place where you can get a little messy, like the kitchen. You’ll need some supplies:

  • An ice cube tray or six empty glasses
  • A few paintbrushes (three should be enough)
  • Red, yellow, and blue food coloring

Fill the ice cube tray halfway with water. Then, add a few drops of red, yellow, and blue food coloring to three separate cubes. Now, you have red, yellow, and blue water!

Mixing Colors

What happens if we mix two colors together? Let’s find out!

  • Take a paintbrush and add a few drops of yellow to a cube with clear water. Then, use a clean brush to add blue. What color do you think it will be? It’s green!
  • Next, mix blue and red in another cube. You get purple!
  • Finally, mix yellow and red. What do you get? Orange!

When you mix yellow and blue, you get green. Yellow and red make orange, and red and blue make purple. But don’t stop there! Keep experimenting by mixing different amounts of colors.

Understanding Primary Colors

The first three colors we used—red, yellow, and blue—are called primary colors. They are special because you can’t make them by mixing other colors. But you can mix them to create many other colors!

Now that you know about primary colors, you can use this knowledge when painting. Want to paint a green tree but don’t have green paint? Mix yellow and blue! Need a darker green? Add more blue. Want a lighter green? Add more yellow!

Keep Experimenting!

Keep mixing and combining colors until you find the perfect shade. Did you try our color experiment? How did it go? We’d love to hear about it! Get help from a grown-up and send us a picture of your experiment to [email protected]. See you next time!

  • What is your favorite color, and where do you see it most often in your everyday life? Can you think of something special that is that color?
  • Have you ever mixed colors before? What new color did you create, and how did it make you feel to discover something new?
  • Imagine you could create a brand-new color that no one has ever seen before. What would you name it, and what would it look like?
  1. Color Hunt: Go on a color hunt around your house or garden! Take a piece of paper and draw a rainbow with the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. Then, find objects that match each color and place them next to your rainbow drawing. Can you find something for every color? Share your discoveries with a friend or family member and talk about where you found each color.

  2. Color Mixing Art: Create your own artwork using the colors you learned to mix. Use the primary colors (red, yellow, and blue) and try to make as many new colors as you can. Paint a picture using these new colors. What happens if you mix a little more of one color than another? Experiment and see how many different shades you can create. Display your artwork and explain to someone how you made each color.

  3. Color Story: Imagine a story where colors come to life! Choose your favorite color and think about what kind of character it would be. Is it a brave red superhero or a calm blue ocean explorer? Write a short story or draw a comic strip about your color character’s adventure. Share your story with a friend or family member and ask them what their favorite color character would be.
