In today’s Circle Time with Caroline and Sophie, the focus was on monster trucks, specifically dump trucks, and their impressive capabilities. The lesson included reading “Monster Dump Trucks,” discussing the truck’s parts, and learning how to spell the word “truck.” The session also featured favorite trucks and vans shared by friends, along with a fun show and tell activity.
  1. What is a dump truck used for?
  2. Can you name something that goes in a dump truck?
  3. What is your favorite type of truck and why?

Welcome to Circle Time with Caroline and Sophie!

Hello, friends! I’m Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids team, and I’m here with my friend Sophie. Today, we’re excited to talk about something super cool—monster trucks! Sophie is standing in front of one of the biggest trucks she’s ever seen, and we’re going to learn all about them.

Monster Dump Trucks

We’re reading a book called “Monster Dump Trucks” by Bellwether. These giant trucks help builders and miners move heavy loads. Every dump truck has a cab, which is where the driver sits. Can you spot the cab in the picture? It’s the area where the driver sits.

The bed of the truck is a large box behind the cab. It holds things like sand, dirt, and more. What do you think people put in a dump truck? Maybe little rocks, sand, or even wood!

Biggest Dump Trucks

The largest dump trucks are so big that they can’t travel on regular roads. Some are even taller than houses! To get into these massive trucks, people use ladders. The tires can be taller than a person! Imagine how big that is!

These trucks have king-size beds and can carry up to 400 tons, which is the weight of 200 cars! That’s one strong truck!

Spelling the Word “Truck”

Let’s spell the word “truck” together. It starts with the /t/ sound, which is the letter T. Then comes the /tr/ sound, made by T-R. In the middle, we have the short U sound, /u/. At the end, we hear the /k/ sound, made by the letters C and K. So, T-R-U-C-K spells “truck”!

Favorite Trucks

We asked some friends about their favorite trucks. Some like cement trucks, ice cream trucks, and garbage trucks. Each truck has a special job, like mixing cement, delivering ice cream, or picking up trash.

Dan’s Favorite Vans

Our friend Dan loves vans! He showed us the Khan Academy Kids van, which is orange and white. Vans can carry lots of things, like bags, boxes, and even fruit. Dan’s favorite van is a camper van, which has a kitchen, bathroom, and bed. Camper vans can take you to amazing places like snowy mountains or lakes where you can have a picnic.

Show and Tell

We also had a show and tell with our friend Kodi, who is five years old. Kodi showed us his favorite truck and how it dumps rocks. It was so much fun!

Thank you for joining us today to learn about trucks, dump trucks, and vans. We hope you had a great time, and we can’t wait to see you next time. Goodbye for now from Caroline, Sophie, and the Khan Academy Kids team!

  • What is the biggest vehicle you have ever seen, and what did it look like? How did it make you feel to see something so big?
  • If you could drive any kind of truck or van, which one would you choose and why? What special job would your truck or van do?
  • Have you ever seen a truck or van doing its job, like a garbage truck picking up trash or an ice cream truck delivering treats? What did you notice about how it worked?
  1. Build Your Own Truck: Gather some recycled materials like cardboard boxes, plastic bottles, and bottle caps. Use these materials to create your own model of a dump truck. Think about where the cab and the bed of the truck should be. Once you’ve built your truck, show it to your friends or family and explain how it works. What materials did you use for the tires? How did you make the cab?

  2. Truck Spotting Adventure: Go on a walk with a family member or friend and try to spot different types of trucks in your neighborhood. Can you find a dump truck, a garbage truck, or maybe an ice cream truck? Count how many trucks you see and talk about what each truck might be doing. Why do you think trucks are important in our community?

  3. Truck Story Time: Imagine you are a driver of a giant dump truck. Write or draw a short story about your day. Where do you go? What do you carry in your truck? Do you have any adventures along the way? Share your story with your class or family and see what exciting truck tales they come up with!
