Welcome to Story Time!

Hi everyone! Today, we’re going to read a fun story called “Muddy Paws” by Moira Butterfield and Simon Mendes. Are you ready to find out what happens with this cute puppy?

A Special Day for Ben

It was a very special day for a boy named Ben because he got a new puppy! Ben was so excited and said, “I’ll teach you everything I know, but first, I need to find the perfect name for you.”

The little puppy thought, “I don’t mind what name you choose as long as you give me lots of cuddles!”

Looking for a Name

Ben looked around his room to find a good name for his puppy. He checked his storybook, but none of the names seemed right.

While Ben was thinking, the curious puppy decided to explore. He sniffed around and accidentally knocked over a flower pot. Oops! Muddy paw prints were everywhere!

Adventures in the Park

Ben thought, “Maybe I can think of a good name at the park.” So off they went!

The puppy was so excited and ran to look behind a tree. He didn’t mean to jump in the mud, but squelch! Muddy paw prints were everywhere again!

A Garden Party Surprise

Ben’s neighbors were having a garden party. “Maybe someone at the party can help us find a name,” Ben thought.

The playful puppy leaned over a pond and splash! He fell in and got all wet, leaving more muddy paw prints everywhere!

Digging in the Garden

Back at home, the puppy wanted to dig in the garden. He found lots of things: a lost ring, an old tool, and even a toy car that Ben had lost!

He didn’t mean to bring all that mud inside, but splat! More muddy paw prints everywhere!

The Perfect Name

Ben looked at his messy, funny puppy and said, “You are the muckiest, muddiest, funniest puppy ever! There’s only one name for you: Muddy Paws!”

Yay! The puppy finally had a name!

Thanks for Joining Story Time!

Isn’t Muddy Paws the cutest? We hope you enjoyed the story! Come back soon for more fun stories. Bye-bye!

  • What would you name a new puppy if you got one, and why would you choose that name?
  • Have you ever had a messy adventure like Muddy Paws? What happened, and how did you feel about it?
  • Why do you think Ben decided to name the puppy “Muddy Paws”? Can you think of a time when you gave someone or something a special name?
  1. Activity: Muddy Paws Art

Let’s create our own “Muddy Paws” art! Use brown paint or mud to make paw prints on a piece of paper. Imagine you are the puppy from the story and think about where you would leave your paw prints. Would it be in the garden, at the park, or somewhere else? Share your artwork with your friends and talk about the adventures your puppy might have!

  2. Activity: Name That Puppy

Just like Ben, let’s think of fun names for a puppy. Look around your room or outside and find objects or things that could inspire a name. Write down your favorite names and explain why you chose them. How do these names reflect the personality or adventures of your imaginary puppy?

  3. Question: Observing Patterns

Next time you go to the park or play outside, look for patterns in nature. Can you find any footprints or paw prints? What do they tell you about the animals or people who made them? Discuss with your friends or family what you think happened and how these patterns are similar to the ones Muddy Paws made in the story.

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

Hi everyone! Welcome to the Story Time Family. Today we have “Muddy Paws” by Moira Butterfield and Simon Mendes. Shall we find out what this cutie is all about?

[Applause]

It was a special day for Ben; he had a new puppy. “I’ll teach you all the things I know,” said Ben, “but first I need to choose a name for you. I’ll need to think hard about it; it has to be just perfect.”

“I don’t really mind what name you choose as long as you give me lots of cuddles,” thought the new puppy.

Ben looked around his bedroom to see if he could find an idea for the perfect puppy name. “Oh, look at my storybook,” he said, but none of the names in the book were right for his new puppy.

“I think I’ll leave you to hunt for names,” said Ben.

Not the new puppy! “I’d rather look behind that flower pot,” thought the little puppy. So he crept over, sniffed, and then climbed. He didn’t mean to knock the flower pot over, but oops, that’s just what he did! He made muddy paw prints everywhere.

“Let’s go to the park; I might be able to think of a good name there,” said Ben.

“All right, I’ll look behind that tree,” thought the little puppy. So he ran and he ran. He didn’t mean to jump in the mud, but squelch, that’s just what he did! He made muddy paw prints everywhere.

Oh, what a mess! Ben’s neighbors were having a party in the garden. “One of the guests might be able to think of a good name for you,” said Ben. “Let’s go and ask them.”

“All right, I’ll look in the pond,” thought the new puppy. So he leaned over and leaned over a little bit more.

[Applause]

He didn’t mean to fall in the pond, but splash, that’s just what he did! Oh no, he’s all wet now! He made muddy paw prints everywhere.

“Oh dear, we better go home and clean you up,” said Ben.

“I’d rather go digging in the garden,” thought the new puppy. So he dug and he dug and he dug. This time he found lots of things: a lost ring, an old spanner, and a toy car that Ben had lost.

He didn’t mean to bring all that mud indoors, but splat, that’s just what he did! He made muddy paw prints everywhere.

“Mommy’s not gonna be happy,” he thought.

And he didn’t mean to find a name for himself at last, but guess what? That’s just what he did!

“You are the muckiest, muddiest, funniest puppy there ever was! There’s only one name for you: Muddy Paws!”

Yay! New name!
