Murcia, Spain – Educational Trip around the World

Welcome to our exciting Trip Around the World! Today, we’re going to explore the beautiful city of Murcia. Lily and Jeff are feeling a bit worried because their teacher asked them to learn about their family history, and they aren’t sure where to begin.

Discovering Family Roots

Lily and Jeff’s dad has a great idea to help them. He shows them an old map that talks about their family. “Look, kids! This map can help us find out where your grandparents were born and learn more about our relatives,” he says.

“That’s a fantastic idea!” says Dad. “Pack your bags! With this map and my new invention, we can follow in the footsteps of our ancestors around the world. You’ll see how much fun learning can be!”

All Aboard to Murcia!

The adventure begins as they hop on a train to Murcia, the place where Grandma Maria was born. “Murcia is so pretty, Dad!” says Lily. “Grandma told us you can see all of Spain from the tower of the cathedral.”

The Amazing Cathedral of Murcia

The Cathedral of Murcia, also called St. Mary’s Cathedral, is the biggest church in the city. It was finished in the 15th century and has a very tall bell tower that is 305 feet high. It’s one of the tallest towers in the country!

“Look, kids!” says Dad. “Your grandma lived near that big theater before she moved to France.”

The Famous Romea Theater

The Romea Theater is in Murcia’s Old City. It’s the main theater in the city and one of the most important in Spain. It was opened by Queen Isabella II in 1862.

Grandma Maria’s Farm Days

“Dad, Grandma Maria worked on a farm when she was young, right?” asks Jeff. “Our teacher told us that the Murcia countryside is so rich that they send fruits and vegetables all over Europe.”

Lily, Jeff, and their dad will always remember their special trip to Murcia. Before they continue their journey to Mexico to visit their aunt, they take a picture together as a souvenir.

  • What do you think it would be like to visit a place where your grandparents were born? How do you think it might feel to learn about your family history in that way?
  • If you could travel anywhere in the world to learn about your family or a place you’re curious about, where would you go and why?
  • Have you ever visited a place that felt special to you or your family? What made it special, and what did you learn from that experience?
  1. Create Your Family Map: Just like Lily and Jeff, you can make your own family map! Ask your parents or guardians to help you find out where your grandparents or other family members were born. Use a large piece of paper to draw a map and mark these places. You can even add pictures or drawings of famous landmarks from those places. Share your map with the class and tell a story about one of the places your family is from.

  2. Build a Mini Cathedral: Use building blocks or recycled materials like cardboard and paper rolls to create a model of the Cathedral of Murcia. Try to make the bell tower as tall as you can! Once your model is complete, discuss with your classmates what you learned about the cathedral and why it is important to the city of Murcia.

  3. Fruit and Vegetable Hunt: Go on a mini adventure in your kitchen or local grocery store to find fruits and vegetables that might come from the Murcia countryside. With the help of an adult, pick one fruit or vegetable and learn how it grows. Draw a picture of it and write a sentence about why it’s important to eat fruits and vegetables.
