In the lesson “My Online Neighborhood,” a seven-year-old shares their experiences exploring the internet, likening it to an exciting neighborhood filled with opportunities to learn, play, and connect with family. They emphasize the importance of online safety by outlining three key rules: always asking parents for permission, only communicating with known individuals, and visiting age-appropriate websites. The lesson highlights the fun and educational aspects of the internet while promoting responsible usage.
  1. What do you think is important to remember before using the internet?
  2. Can you name one fun thing you can do online?
  3. Why is it important to talk to people you know when you’re online?

My Online Neighborhood

Hi there! I’m seven years old, and I love using my mom’s computer. But before I do, I always ask her first.

Exploring the Internet

The internet is like a big, exciting neighborhood. You can visit amazing places, chat with family and friends, and learn lots of cool things.

Yesterday, I visited a zoo near my house. I saw a baby zebra and took her picture. Then, I changed the color of her stripes, added a funny hat, and put her in my collection of silly animals. It was so much fun!

Traveling Far Away

Later, I went on a virtual trip to Kenya, a country in Africa. Did you know lots of zebras live there? It was amazing to see so many zebras!

Chatting with Family

Sometimes, I use the internet to talk to people I know, like my grandma who lives far away. I said, “Hi, Grandma!” She’s baking cookies for my birthday. Yum! I wish I could smell them through the computer.

Playing Games and Learning

I also love playing fun games online. Yay, I scored! I enjoy drawing and creating new things to share with my friends. It’s so cool!

Sometimes, I visit websites to learn new things, like about dinosaurs. I always make sure the websites are just right for me.

Staying Safe Online

The internet is a super fun place, but just like crossing the street, you have to be careful. Here are three important rules to remember:

1. Always ask your parents first.
2. Only talk to people you know.
3. Stick to places that are just right for you.

Wow, that was fun! Now it’s time for dinner. I’m logging off, but I can’t wait to explore more next time. Bye bye!

  • What are some of your favorite things to do on the internet, and why do you enjoy them?
  • Have you ever talked to a family member or friend online? What did you talk about, and how did it make you feel?
  • Why do you think it’s important to ask a parent before going online, and how do you stay safe when exploring the internet?
  1. Internet Adventure Map: Create your own “Internet Adventure Map” by drawing or using craft materials. Think about all the fun places you can visit online, like a zoo, a virtual trip to another country, or a chat with family. Draw these places on your map and share your adventure with a friend or family member. What new place would you like to explore next?

  2. Safe Surfing Role Play: With a friend or family member, act out different scenarios about using the internet. One person can pretend to be the child using the computer, and the other can be the parent. Practice asking for permission, choosing safe websites, and talking only to people you know. Discuss why each step is important for staying safe online.

  3. Internet Safety Poster: Design a colorful poster that shows the three important rules for staying safe online: asking parents first, talking only to people you know, and sticking to the right places. Use drawings, stickers, or magazine cutouts to make your poster exciting. Display it in your room or classroom to remind yourself and others about safe internet use.

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

Hi, I am seven years old! I love playing on my mom’s computer, but I always get permission first.

Mom, can I go on the computer?

Mom: “Sure, sweetie.”

I love my mom’s computer because I can go on the internet. The internet is kind of like your neighborhood. You can visit cool places, talk to family and friends, and learn lots of new things.

Like yesterday, I visited a zoo that’s near my house. I saw a baby zebra, took her picture, changed the color of her stripes, added a hat, and added it to my collection of wacky animals. Awesome!

Then later, I went to a place far, far away. I visited Kenya—that’s a country in Africa. Lots of zebras live there. Wow, that’s a lot of zebras!

Sometimes on the internet, I talk to people I know, like my grandma who lives in another state. Hi, Grandma! She’s making me cookies that she’ll send me for my birthday. Yummy! I wish the internet had smell-o-rama.

I can talk to different people on the internet, like my cousin, but I only talk to people I know. What I like most on the internet is that I get to play fun games. (cheering) Score!

I also like to draw and create new things and share them with my friends. Cool! Sometimes I visit websites where I learn new things, but I always stick to websites that are just right for me. Wow, dinosaurs!

The internet is a super fun place, but just like when you cross a street in your neighborhood, you also have to be careful when you go online.

Here are three rules to remember:
1. Always ask your parents first.
2. Only talk to people you know.
3. Stick to places that are just right for you.

Wow, that was fun!

Mom: “Dinner time!”

I’m logging off now. I can’t wait to get back on again to see where I can visit next. Bye bye!
