Hello, friends! How are you today? Have you been kind and helpful? I hope you’re having fun at school and making lots of new friends. Today, we’re going to read a special book together!
This book is called “Nurse Bear: This First Aid” by Martha Almanza. Let’s meet Nurse Bear! Nurse Bear works in a hospital and helps people feel better when they are sick. Nurses can also work in schools, ambulances, and even helicopters!
Nurse Bear has lots of friends who help too! There’s Dr. Tiger, the radiographer, Monkey the dietitian, and Bonnie the physiotherapist. They all work together to take care of everyone.
If someone is really sick, you can call for help. Do you remember the number to call for an ambulance? Nurses have special tools like plasters, bandages, and medicines to help people feel better.
You can help your friends when they’re not feeling well! Let’s learn how:
Keep germs away by washing your hands. Use water and soap, rub, rub, rub, rinse, and dry!
If someone has a small cut, wash your hands, press on the cut, clean it with water, dry it, put on a plaster, and tell a grown-up.
If someone has a burn, hold it under cold water for 10 minutes, call for help, and cover it with a clean plastic bag.
If someone bumps their head, help them stay calm, tell a grown-up, and hold something cold on the bump.
If someone has asthma, help them sit down, stay calm, get their inhaler, and tell a grown-up.
Some people have allergies. If you have allergies, tell your friends so they can help you stay safe.
Nurses are amazing! They help us feel better, and we should thank them for all their hard work. If you liked this story, you can get your own copy of the book. Thank you for reading with us today!
See you next time! Bye-bye!
Role-Playing Nurse Bear: Gather some simple props like bandages, toy stethoscopes, and pretend medicines. Encourage the children to role-play as Nurse Bear and their friends. Let them practice washing hands, applying bandages, and using pretend tools to help a “sick” friend. Ask them questions like, “What would you do if your friend had a small cut?” or “How can you help someone with a bump on their head?” This activity helps children understand the importance of helping others and the steps involved in basic first aid.
Germ Detective: Take the children on a “germ detective” mission around the classroom or home. Provide them with magnifying glasses and ask them to find places where germs might hide, like doorknobs, toys, or tables. Afterward, discuss why it’s important to wash hands and keep these areas clean. Ask them, “How can we make sure our classroom is a safe place for everyone?” This activity encourages observation and reinforces the concept of hygiene.
Thank You Card for Nurses: Provide art supplies and ask the children to create thank you cards for nurses. Encourage them to draw pictures and write simple messages of gratitude. Discuss why nurses are important and how they help people feel better. Ask questions like, “What would you say to Nurse Bear to thank her for her help?” This activity fosters appreciation and understanding of the role of healthcare workers.

Hi everyone! Welcome back to the Storytime Family. How’s it going? Have you been a good girl or a good boy? Have you been kind to your parents? How are you enjoying school? I hope you’ve made lots of new friends and learned new things this year.
Well, finally, you’re sitting down reading a book with us! Today we have a book called “Nurse Bear: This First Aid” by Martha Almanza. Let’s have a look!
Hi, my name is Bear and I am a nurse. I look after children and grown-ups when they are unwell. I work in a hospital. Nurses also work in schools, ambulances, and even helicopters. Nurses like me don’t work alone. This is Dr. Tiger, the radiographer, Monkey the dietitian, and Bonnie the physiotherapist. Each of us is part of a big team. We’re all here to look after you.
Remember, if you see someone who is really sick, you can call us by dialing… do you remember the number?
I have an emergency; I need an ambulance.
Nurses have many special tools to help people feel better. We have things like plasters, gauze, drops, syrups, tablets, creams, and medicines, as well as scissors, bandages, syringes, tape, and lots of love.
Wait, someone needs my help! I will get my bag. I’m ready to do some checks. The pulse oximeter has a magic red light; it tells me how well Cat the singer is breathing and how strong her heart is. The blood pressure monitor shows me… My duck the vomiter tells me if she’s too hot or too cold. The stethoscope lets me hear all the noises in her body. When I know whether Cat has a headache or an upset tummy, I know what to do.
You can help your friends when they’re feeling sick too! Let’s wash our hands to keep all the germs away. Water and soap are enough. Just remember these steps: water, soap, rub, rub, rub, rinse, and dry.
Pick the painter has a small cut. You can help! First, wash your hands, then press hard on the cut. Clean it with water, pat it dry with a clean towel, put on a plaster, and tell a grown-up.
Elephant the chef has a burn; her skin is red and sore. You can help! Hold the burn under cold running water for 10 minutes, shout for help, then cover it with cling film or a clean plastic bag.
Dog the builder banged his head; he’s crying and has a bump. You can help! Help him stay calm, tell a grown-up, and hold something cold where he hit his head.
Turtle the runner has asthma. When he has an asthma attack, it’s hard for him to breathe and he makes wheezing noises. You can help! Help him sit down, tell him not to worry, get his inhaler, and help him use it. Tell a grown-up.
Some animals, boys, and girls have allergies. Allergies can make us feel unwell, so we always try to avoid the things we’re allergic to. Mouse the detective is allergic to nuts and cats. If you have allergies, tell your friends.
It was nice meeting you and showing you what nurses do. Remember, you can help a lot too! If you need us, call for an ambulance; we’re always here to help you.
Nurses are amazing, aren’t they? They do all the work, and we should give them lots of love for taking care of us.
