In today’s Circle Time with Caroline and Sophie, the focus was on two engaging stories: “Glide on Ice,” which teaches the importance of perseverance and friendship through Ollo’s ice skating journey, and “Seal Pups,” which explores the life of seal pups and their growth in the ocean. The lesson also included a fun activity showcasing winter-themed drawings from friends, encouraging creativity and participation.
  1. What did Ollo learn about trying new things in the story “Glide on Ice”?
  2. How did Kodi help Ollo feel better when he was sad about skating?
  3. What is something special you learned about seal pups from the second story?

Welcome to Circle Time!

Hello, friends! Welcome to Circle Time with Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids Team. Today, Caroline is joined by her friend Sophie. They are excited to share some fun stories and activities with you!

Our First Story: “Glide on Ice”

Today, we have two books to read. The first one is “Glide on Ice” by Cynthia Platt. It’s about a character named Ollo who dreams of learning to ice skate. Ollo is nervous about skating, but his friend Kodi offers to help him.

At the lake, Ollo tries to skate but keeps falling. He feels frustrated and a bit sad. Kodi suggests taking a break, and they enjoy some hot chocolate. After resting, Kodi encourages Ollo to try again, reminding him that practice makes perfect.

With Kodi’s help, Ollo keeps trying and eventually starts to glide across the ice. Ollo’s dream of skating comes true, and he feels happy and proud!

Learning About Sounds

In the story, we learned about words with the long /a/ sound, like “skate” and “lake.” The magic ‘e’ at the end of these words makes the ‘a’ say its name. We also explored the word “slide,” where the magic ‘e’ changes the short /i/ sound in “slid” to a long /i/ sound.

Our Second Story: “Seal Pups”

Our second book is about seal pups. Seal pups live on the ice with their mothers. Each mother seal has one pup, and they learn each other’s smell and voice. Seal pups drink milk from their mothers and grow blubber to stay warm.

As they grow, seal pups learn to eat fish and other ocean animals. Eventually, they dive for food and play in the ocean. It’s fascinating to learn about these adorable animals!

Show and Tell: Winter Drawings

We received some amazing winter drawings from our friends. Disha drew a colorful gingerbread house, Harrison illustrated the North Pole with Santa’s house, and Vittol shared a penguin drawing. Penguins live in Antarctica, which is at the South Pole.

Leila sent a drawing featuring characters like Ollo and Kodi, along with a chocolate cake. Chaya drew Reya with a rainbow and practiced writing the letter ‘R.’ Kai created five different drawings and labeled them with character names.

Join Us Next Time!

Thank you for joining us for Circle Time! We loved sharing stories and seeing your wonderful drawings. If you have any character or winter drawings, please send them to us. We would love to include them in our next Circle Time. Have a fantastic day, and we’ll see you next time!

Goodbye from Caroline and Sophie on the Khan Academy Kids Team!

  • Have you ever tried something new that was a little scary at first, like Ollo learning to ice skate? How did you feel, and what helped you keep trying?
  • Can you think of other words that have the magic ‘e’ like “skate” and “lake”? How does the magic ‘e’ change the way the word sounds?
  • What do you think it would be like to be a seal pup living on the ice? What would you enjoy doing, and what might be challenging?
  1. Ice Skating Practice: Just like Ollo learned to skate, you can practice balancing and gliding at home. Find a safe space on a smooth floor and pretend to ice skate. Use socks to slide around and see how far you can glide. Can you balance on one foot? Try to make a game out of it by seeing who can glide the farthest or balance the longest. This will help you understand how practice can make you better at something new!

  2. Magic ‘e’ Word Hunt: Go on a word hunt around your house or in books to find words with the magic ‘e’ that changes the vowel sound. Look for words like “cake,” “bike,” or “home.” Write them down and say them out loud. Can you hear how the magic ‘e’ changes the sound of the vowel? Try to come up with your own list of magic ‘e’ words and share them with a friend or family member.

  3. Seal Pup Adventure: Imagine you are a seal pup learning to swim and dive. Create a simple obstacle course in your living room or backyard to mimic diving and swimming. Use pillows or cushions as icebergs to climb over and pretend to dive under. As you play, think about how seal pups learn from their mothers and practice to become strong swimmers. What other animals do you think have to practice to learn new skills?
