Hi everyone! Today, we’re going to have lots of fun with a special counting book called “One Very Big Bear” by Ellis Briere Hake. Are you ready to count with me? Let’s get started!
Once upon a time, there was one very big white bear standing on some ice. He said, “I’m very big! I’m almost a giant!”
Then, two walruses swam up to the bear. They said, “Oh bear, you’re not that big! Look at us: one plus one, we two are just as big as you!”
Next, three foxes scampered by. They said, “Oh bear, you silly thing! Look at us: one plus one plus one, we three are just as big as you!”
After that, four sea lions joined the fun. They said, “Oh bear, stop showing off! Look at us: one plus one plus one plus one, we four are just as big as you!”
Then, five penguins waddled past. They said, “Oh bear, you make us laugh! Look at us: one plus one plus one plus one plus one, we five are just as big as you!”
Finally, six sardines joined in. They said, “Oh bear, don’t be so foolish! Look at us: one plus one plus one plus one plus one plus one, we six are just as big as you!”
The bear thought for a moment and had a clever idea. He realized that six sardines were just the right size for breakfast!
And that’s the end of “One Very Big Bear.” We counted all the way to six! Can you count even higher? Maybe to ten or even a hundred? I bet you can!
Thanks for joining us for Story Time. We hope you had fun counting with us. Come back soon for more stories. Bye-bye!
Animal Size Comparison: Gather some toy animals or cut-out pictures of the animals from the story: a bear, walruses, foxes, sea lions, penguins, and sardines. Ask the children to arrange them in order from the biggest to the smallest. Discuss with them why they think one animal is bigger or smaller than another. Encourage them to use words like “taller,” “shorter,” “heavier,” and “lighter” to describe the animals.
Counting and Grouping Game: Provide children with small objects like buttons, blocks, or beads. Ask them to group the objects into sets of one, two, three, four, five, and six, just like the animals in the story. Once they have grouped them, have them count the total number of objects in each group. Encourage them to explore what happens when they add one more to each group. How does the total change?
Story Time Adventure: Take the children on a mini-adventure around the classroom or playground. Ask them to find and count different objects or animals they see, such as leaves, rocks, or birds. Encourage them to create their own story by imagining what these objects or animals might say to each other, just like in “One Very Big Bear.” Have them share their stories with the class.
Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

Hi everyone! Welcome to Story Time. Thanks for dropping by. Today, we have a special counting book called “One Very Big Bear” by Ellis Briere Hake. I hope I said that right!
Now, how good are you at counting? Shall we check out this book and see how well you can count? I think we should! Let’s get started.
One very big bear. One white bear stood on some ice. “I’m very big,” he said. “I’m almost a giant!”
[Applause]
Two walruses swam up. “Oh bear,” they said, “you’re not that big! Look at this: one plus one, we two are just as big as you!”
Three foxes scampered by. “Oh bear,” they said, “you silly thing! Look at this: one plus one plus one, we three are just as big as you!”
Four sea lions joined the fun. “Oh bear,” they said, “stop showing off! Look at this: one plus one plus one plus one, we four are just as big as you!” They look pretty thin, though. What do you think?
Five penguins waddled past. “Oh bear,” they said, “you make us laugh! Look at this: one plus one plus one plus one plus one, we five are just as big as you!”
Six sardines joined in as well. “Oh bear,” they said, “don’t be so foolish! Look at this: one plus one plus one plus one plus one plus one, we six are just as big as you!”
That’s a very, very skinny bear, wouldn’t you think?
Foolish, thought the bear. Then he had a very smart idea: six sardines were the perfect size for breakfast!
And that was the end of “One Very Big Bear.” And we only counted to six! Can you believe that? Can you count to a hundred? I bet you could!
