By focusing on a specific example, such as the book *The Tale of Peter Rabbit*, they identify their opinion and brainstorm supporting reasons, which helps them prepare for writing a more detailed piece. The lesson emphasizes the importance of organizing ideas before crafting full sentences, setting the stage for effective writing.

Opinion Writing for Kids!

Making a Plan

Let’s have fun writing about our favorite things! Today, I’m going to talk about my favorite book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter. To help me get started, I’m going to use a special tool called a graphic organizer. This will help me organize my thoughts and ideas!

In the middle of my organizer, I’ll write my opinion: The Tale of Peter Rabbit is a great book! Around it, I’ll write four reasons why I think so. Reasons are like little helpers that explain why you believe something.

Here’s how my plan looks. My opinion is in the center: The Tale of Peter Rabbit is a great book. Since this is just a plan, I don’t need to write full sentences yet.

Now, let’s think of some reasons to support my opinion. I can ask myself, “Why do I think The Tale of Peter Rabbit is a great book?” Hmm… I really like the characters in the book. They are so cute! I’ll add this reason to my organizer.

What else do I like? Oh, some parts of the book are really silly and make me laugh. I think I’ll add that too! I also love the illustrations. They are really pretty and colorful. I just need one more reason! I think this book is also great because it can teach kids a lesson!

There! My plan is complete, and now I’m ready to start writing! Stay tuned for the next episode to see how I write an introduction.

  • What is your favorite book, and why do you like it? Can you think of reasons that make it special to you?
  • Have you ever used a tool like a graphic organizer to help you plan something? How did it help you organize your thoughts?
  • Think about a time when you had to explain why you liked something. How did you share your reasons with others, and what did they think?
  1. Create Your Own Opinion Organizer: Choose your favorite book, toy, or food. Use a piece of paper to draw a big circle in the middle and write your opinion inside it. Around the circle, draw four smaller circles. In each smaller circle, write a reason why you like your chosen item. Share your organizer with a friend or family member and explain your reasons.

  2. Opinion Detective: Go on a hunt around your home or classroom to find objects or pictures. Pick one and think about whether you like it or not. Write down your opinion and come up with two reasons to support it. Share your findings with the class and see if others agree or have different opinions.

  3. Illustration Exploration: Look at the illustrations in your favorite book. Think about how they make you feel and how they help tell the story. Draw your own picture that shows your opinion about the book. Use colors and details to express why you think the book is great or not. Share your drawing and explain your opinion to a friend.
