In this lesson on opinion writing for kids, students learn how to craft an effective introduction for their opinion pieces. The introduction should capture the reader’s attention with a hook, clearly state the topic, and express the writer’s opinion, as demonstrated through the example of the book *The Tale of Peter Rabbit*. The lesson sets the stage for further writing by emphasizing the importance of a strong introduction and hints at upcoming lessons on supporting arguments.
  1. What is the first thing you should do in your introduction to make people want to read more?
  2. Why is it important to say what your topic is in your introduction?
  3. Can you share your own opinion about a book you like in your introduction? What would you say?

Writing an Introduction

Today, we’re going to learn how to write an introduction for your opinion piece. I’m going to share my opinion about my favorite book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit. I’ve already made a plan, so now I’m ready to start writing my draft. Let’s begin with the introduction!

An introduction is the first part of your writing. It’s super important because it helps your readers know what you’re going to talk about. Here are three things your introduction should do:

  • Grab the reader’s attention
  • Say what your topic is
  • Share your opinion

First, let’s grab the reader’s attention with a hook. I like to use a question to make people curious. Since The Tale of Peter Rabbit is about animals, I’ll ask, “Do you like books about animals?”

Next, I need to say what my topic is. I’ll mention the title and author of the book. So, I’ll write, “If so, you should read The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter!”

Finally, it’s time to share my opinion. I’ll say, “It is a really great book!”

And there you have it! My introduction is all done!

Stay tuned for the next part of this series, where I’ll show you how to add reasons and examples to support my opinion!

  • What is your favorite book or story, and how would you introduce it to make your friends want to read it?
  • Can you think of a time when you shared your opinion about something with someone? How did you start the conversation?
  • Why do you think it’s important to grab someone’s attention when you start telling them about something you like?
  1. Create Your Own Hook: Think about your favorite book or movie. Write a question that would make someone curious about it. For example, if your favorite book is about space, you might ask, “Have you ever wondered what it’s like to travel among the stars?” Share your question with a friend or family member and see if it makes them curious!

  2. Book Title and Author Hunt: Go on a mini scavenger hunt at home or in your classroom. Find three books and write down their titles and authors. Practice saying them out loud. Then, choose one book and write a sentence introducing it, just like in the lesson. For example, “If you like adventures, you should read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling!”

  3. Opinion Sharing Circle: Gather with a few friends or family members. Each person takes a turn sharing their opinion about their favorite book or movie. Use the introduction format from the lesson: start with a hook, mention the title and author, and share your opinion. Listen to others and see if their introductions make you interested in their favorites!

**Writing an Introduction**

I’m writing my opinion about my favorite book, *The Tale of Peter Rabbit*. I made a plan for my writing, so now I’m ready to write my draft. I’ll start with an introduction. An introduction is the very first part of your writing. Introductions should do a few important things. They should:

1. Hook the reader
2. Name the topic you are writing about
3. Tell your opinion!

I’ll start with a hook. I like to hook the reader with a question. Since *The Tale of Peter Rabbit* is about animals, I’ll ask the reader, “Do you like books about animals?” Now I need to name the topic, which is the title and author of the book. If so, you should read *The Tale of Peter Rabbit* by Beatrix Potter! Last, I need to tell my opinion: “It is a really great book!” That’s it! My introduction is finished!
