In this lesson on opinion writing for kids, students learn how to effectively conclude their opinion pieces by restating their opinion, summarizing their reasons, and leaving the reader with a final thought. Using the example of the book *The Tale of Peter Rabbit*, the lesson emphasizes the importance of wrapping up writing in a way that reinforces the writer’s perspective and encourages others to engage with the topic. By practicing these steps, students can enhance their writing skills and create strong conclusions.
  1. What do you think is the most important part of a conclusion in opinion writing?
  2. Can you tell me your opinion about your favorite book and why you like it?
  3. What final thought would you want to share with someone about a book you love?

Opinion Writing for Kids: Writing a Conclusion

Hey there! Today, we’re going to learn how to finish writing our opinion about something we really like. I’ve been writing about my favorite book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit. I’ve already told everyone what my opinion is and why I think that way. Now, it’s time to write the ending, or conclusion, of my opinion piece!

What is a Conclusion?

A conclusion is the last part of your writing. It helps to wrap everything up nicely. There are three things you need to do in a conclusion:

  1. Say your opinion again.
  2. Summarize your reasons.
  3. Leave the reader with a final thought.

Restating Your Opinion

First, let’s say our opinion one more time. For example, I might say, “Doesn’t The Tale of Peter Rabbit sound like a great book?” This reminds everyone what I think about the book.

Summarizing Your Reasons

Next, we need to quickly go over the reasons why we have this opinion. I could say, “The characters are really cute, parts of the book are very funny, the illustrations are beautiful, and it can even teach you a lesson!” This helps people remember why I like the book so much.

Giving a Final Thought

Finally, let’s give the reader something to think about. I might say, “If this sounds like the type of book you might enjoy, check it out at your local library!” This encourages others to read the book too.

All Done!

Yay! My draft is complete! Now, I’ve finished writing my opinion with a strong conclusion. Next time, I’ll show you how I make my writing even better by revising it. Keep practicing your writing, and you’ll get better and better!

  • What is your favorite book or story, and how would you tell someone else why you like it? Can you think of a way to end your opinion with a fun or interesting thought?
  • Have you ever tried to convince someone to like something you enjoy, like a book, a game, or a movie? What reasons did you give them, and how did you wrap up your conversation?
  • Think about a time when you changed your mind about something after hearing someone else’s opinion. What did they say that made you think differently, and how did they end their opinion?
  1. Opinion Poster: Create a colorful poster about your favorite book or movie. On the poster, write your opinion about it, list three reasons why you like it, and include a final thought to encourage others to read or watch it. Use drawings or cut-out pictures to make your poster exciting and share it with your classmates.

  2. Conclusion Detective: Read a short story or article with a friend or family member. Together, identify the conclusion of the piece. Discuss how the author restated their opinion, summarized their reasons, and left a final thought. Try to come up with your own conclusion for the story and share it with someone.

  3. Opinion Journal: Start an opinion journal where you write about different things you like or dislike. For each entry, practice writing a conclusion by restating your opinion, summarizing your reasons, and giving a final thought. Share your journal with a friend or family member and ask them to write their own opinions too!
