Pete the Cat Visits the Library

Getting a Library Card

One day, Pete the Cat goes to the library with his mom. It’s his first time there! The librarian gives Pete his very own library card. Pete thinks it’s super cool! The librarian is happy and smiles at Pete. Now, it’s time for a fun tour of the library.

Exploring the Library

The librarian shows Pete around. There’s a big desk where people check out books. Pete sees some of his friends reading at a long table. It’s quiet and peaceful, which makes it a nice place to read.

Finding the Perfect Book

The librarian takes Pete to her favorite room. There are lots of little chairs and tables just right for Pete. The shelves are full of books of all shapes, sizes, and colors. Pete asks, “What do I do now?” The librarian says, “Now you read a book!” Pete wonders which book to choose. The librarian tells him he can read any book he likes.

Adventures with Books

Pete looks around and picks a book about airplanes and jets. He reads it and pretends he’s a pilot flying a super-fast jet, doing loops and spirals in the sky.

Next, Pete finds a book with dragons, wizards, and unicorns. He imagines he’s a wizard using magic to protect his castle from a dragon.

Then, Pete opens a book about spiders and insects. He pretends he’s a scientist studying all kinds of critters. Some critters need him to be very still, and others need him to be very fast!

Pete picks a book with scary monsters on the cover. It’s a book of fairy tales. He imagines he’s in a spooky forest trying to outsmart a big bad wolf. But this book is too scary, so he puts it back.

Next, Pete reads a book about the pyramids in Egypt. He pretends he’s an explorer riding a camel across the desert and climbing a giant pyramid.

Then, Pete finds a book with robots. He imagines he’s a robot at a dance party, making whizzing sounds as he moves. When robot Pete talks, he says, “Bleep boop bleep!”

Pete picks up a book about superheroes. He pretends he’s a superhero flying around the city, chasing bad guys, and saving the day.

Finally, Pete spots a big book about the ocean. He imagines he’s a scientist in a submarine, exploring the deep sea and looking for whales, squids, and sharks.

The Magic of Reading

There are so many amazing books at the library! With each book, Pete can imagine being anything he wants. Reading is super fun and groovy!

  • What kind of book would you choose if you were at the library with Pete? Why do you think that book would be fun to read?
  • Have you ever imagined being a character from a book, like Pete did? What character would you like to be, and what adventure would you go on?
  • Why do you think libraries are important places to visit? Can you think of something special you might find or do at a library?
  1. Library Card Craft: Create your own library card! Use colorful paper and markers to design a card with your name on it. Think about what special features your card might have. Would it have a picture of your favorite book or character? Once your card is ready, pretend to check out books at your own imaginary library at home.

  2. Book Adventure Role-Play: Choose a book you like and act out a scene from it. You can be a pilot, a wizard, or even a superhero, just like Pete! Use props from around the house, like a blanket for a cape or a cardboard box for a spaceship. Invite family members to join in and create your own story together.

  3. Library Exploration Game: Next time you visit a library, play a game of “Book Treasure Hunt.” Make a list of different types of books or themes, like animals, space, or fairy tales. See how many you can find. When you find a book, imagine what adventure you might have if you were inside that story. Share your ideas with a friend or family member.
