In “Pete the Cat Goes Camping,” Pete experiences the excitement of his first camping trip with his family, where they set up a tent, explore the woods, and go fishing. As night falls, Pete grapples with his fears of the dark and the sounds of the forest, particularly the legend of Bigfoot, but ultimately learns that differences don’t equate to fear. The next morning, he discovers a note from Bigfoot thanking him for a s’more, reinforcing the idea that even the unknown can be friendly.
  1. What did Pete learn about things that seem scary at first?
  2. How did Pete feel about Bigfoot after he found the note?
  3. What fun things did Pete do while camping with his family?

Pete the Cat Goes Camping

By James Dean

Pete the Cat is super excited because he is going camping for the very first time!

“Don’t forget your sleeping bag,” says Dad. “And your hiking boots,” adds Mom.

The campsite is deep in the woods. Mom and Dad set up the tent while Pete and his brother Bob help collect sticks to make a fire later.

Exploring the Woods

Pete and Bob go for a hike. Bob shows Pete the footprints of different animals. “Do you think we will see anything cool?” asks Pete. “Maybe,” says Bob.

Later, Pete and Dad go fishing. They have to be very quiet and still to catch a fish. Fishing takes a long time, but they finally catch some fish!

Yummy Campfire Dinner

Mom builds a fire and cooks the fish for dinner. It tastes yummy! Next, Pete toasts marshmallows and makes s’mores with chocolate and graham crackers.

As it gets dark, Bob tells Pete a story about a scary hairy giant named Bigfoot who lives in the woods. “Do you think Bigfoot lives here?” asks Pete. “No one has ever seen Bigfoot,” says Bob.

“Don’t let Bob scare you,” says Dad. “Bigfoot is not real,” Mom adds. Pete feels better.

“But if he is real, I bet he’s friendly,” says Dad, “and likes s’mores too.” “That’s not scary,” says Pete. “Maybe he wants a s’more.” Pete leaves one for his hairy friend.

Nighttime Sounds

Soon it’s time for bed. “Lights out, boys,” Dad says. Bob and Pete share a tent. Pete gets into his sleeping bag; it is cozy, but he cannot sleep. The woods seem extra dark, and all the sounds seem extra loud at night.

He hears a weird swooshing sound. “What is that?” he asks Bob. “That’s just the wind,” says Bob.

He hears an odd chirping noise. “What is that?” he asks out loud. “Those are just the crickets,” Bob replies.

Pete hears a strange hooting sound. “What is that?” he wonders. “That’s just an owl,” Bob says. Pete thinks of his friend Owl.

Pete hears a loud snapping sound. “What is that?” he wonders, but Bob is already fast asleep. Pete listens carefully. “Is it Bigfoot?” Pete peeks outside; it is too dark to see anything.

A Surprise in the Morning

When Pete wakes up, he checks the spot where he left the s’more for Bigfoot. The s’more is gone, and there’s a note that says, “Thanks for the treat! XOXO.”

Pete shows his family. “Wow, I knew Bigfoot was real!” says Bob. Pete knows Bigfoot is not scary. Just because he looks different does not mean he is scary. He even likes s’mores too!

  • What do you think it would be like to go camping like Pete the Cat? Have you ever been camping or spent time in nature? What did you see or hear?
  • Pete was a little scared of the sounds he heard at night. Have you ever been scared of something that turned out to be not so scary? What helped you feel better?
  • If you could leave a treat for a mysterious creature like Bigfoot, what would it be and why? What do you think the creature would say in a note back to you?
  1. Animal Footprint Hunt: Go on a mini-adventure in your backyard or a local park with an adult. Look for different animal footprints just like Pete and Bob did. Take a notebook and draw the footprints you find. Can you guess which animals made them? Discuss with your friends or family what animals might live in your area.

  2. Campfire Cooking at Home: With the help of an adult, try making a simple campfire meal at home. You can toast marshmallows over a safe heat source like a candle or a stove. Make your own s’mores using graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows. Talk about why cooking over a fire is different from using a stove or oven.

  3. Nighttime Sound Exploration: Before bedtime, sit quietly in your room or outside with a family member. Close your eyes and listen carefully to the sounds around you. Can you hear the wind, crickets, or other noises? Write down or draw what you hear. Discuss how these sounds might be different from the ones Pete heard in the woods.
