Pete the Cat’s Underwater Adventure

Pete the Cat is super excited! He is on a boat on a sunny day, ready to go on an underwater adventure called scuba diving. Pete puts on his special mask and fins and carries a tank full of air so he can breathe underwater. He hopes to see lots of colorful fish.

Looking for a Seahorse

“If you’re lucky, you might see a seahorse,” says Captain Joe.

“A seahorse?” says Pete. “I can’t wait! I’ve never seen one before.”

“The ridges look like a horse’s mane,” says Captain Joe.

“Groovy!” says Pete.

Pete jumps into the water with a big splash. Down, down, down he goes. Up, up, up go the bubbles. Pete looks for a seahorse but sees a swordfish instead. He swims out of its way so it can pass. Pete waves to a stingray with a long, skinny tail.

Meeting Ocean Friends

“That’s not a seahorse,” thinks Pete. He feels a tickle on his leg. Pete sees a school of fish; they all look alike except for a green one. It puffs up—it’s a blowfish. It’s not a seahorse.

“Where could one be?” Pete wonders. He looks at the rocks and sees something long and purple on the sand. What is that? It’s an octopus with eight legs. It is not a seahorse.

Pete feels another tickle as he swims. What could it be? He turns but doesn’t see anything near him. He sees a cave. Is there a seahorse inside?

Pete sees a crab with claws. “A seahorse does not have claws,” he thinks. The cave gets darker as Pete swims forward. He is still looking for a seahorse and still feels a tickle on his leg. Then Pete sees an eel. It has ridges, but they don’t look like a horse’s mane. The eel is too long to be a seahorse.

Finding His Way

Pete keeps swimming farther into the dark. Soon it is too dark to see. How will he get out? Pete sees a jellyfish that glows in the dark. Now he can swim his way out of the cave. He sees a striped angelfish; it is beautiful but not a seahorse.

“I wonder why it is still so dark,” thinks Pete. It’s because he is in the shadow of a whale. Yikes! Pete wishes he could jump on a seahorse and ride away.

Pete hops on a sea turtle instead. It takes him back to the boat. “I did not see a seahorse,” thinks Pete. “Oh well, I still had a great time.” But what is tickling my tail?

A Surprise Friend

Pete turns and sees a seahorse! What a great surprise! He realizes he had felt the seahorse tickling his tail when he saw the swordfish, stingray, blowfish, octopus, crab, eel, jellyfish, angelfish, whale, and sea turtle.

“You were with me the whole time!” thinks Pete. “What a cool adventure!”

Fun Facts About Seahorses

Did you know seahorses are fish? They have tiny fins to help them swim. Seahorses like to hide in seaweed and coral. They are very good at blending in, just like Pete’s new friend!

  • What do you think it would be like to go on an underwater adventure like Pete the Cat? Have you ever been on an adventure that was exciting or surprising?
  • Pete met many different sea creatures during his dive. Which sea creature would you like to meet and why? Can you think of any other sea creatures that Pete might have seen?
  • Seahorses are very good at hiding. Can you think of a time when you played hide and seek or found something that was hidden? How did it make you feel?
  1. Seahorse Search: Go on a mini adventure in your classroom or backyard! Hide small toy seahorses or pictures of seahorses in different places. Ask the children to find them, just like Pete did in the story. Encourage them to describe where they found each seahorse and what it was hiding behind. This will help them understand how seahorses blend into their surroundings.

  2. Create Your Ocean Scene: Provide children with paper, crayons, and stickers to create their own underwater scene. Ask them to draw or stick different sea creatures they remember from Pete’s adventure, like the swordfish, stingray, or jellyfish. Encourage them to include a seahorse and talk about where they placed it and why. This activity will help them recall the story and understand the concept of underwater habitats.

  3. Seahorse Movements: Discuss with the children how seahorses move using their tiny fins. Have them pretend to be seahorses and move around the room using small, gentle movements. Ask them to think about how they would hide if they were seahorses. This activity will help them understand how seahorses swim and camouflage themselves in the ocean.
