In today’s lesson, we explored the concept of place value, focusing specifically on the hundreds place using examples like the numbers 300, 600, and 400. We learned that the digit in the hundreds place indicates how many hundreds are present, while the zeros in the ones and tens places do not contribute any value. Understanding place value is crucial for grasping larger numbers, and we encouraged students to continue their exploration of numbers.
  1. What does the number 3 in 300 tell us about how many hundreds there are?
  2. When we see the number 6 in 600, what does it mean for the hundreds place?
  3. Why is it important to look at the place of a number to understand its value?

Welcome to the World of Numbers!

Hey there! Today, we’re going to have some fun with numbers. Let’s start by looking at a special number: 300. When we see 300, the most important part is the number 3. It’s in a special spot called the hundreds place. The other numbers, zero in the ones place and zero in the tens place, don’t have any value here.

Understanding the Hundreds Place

The hundreds place is the first spot on the left in our number, 300. Since there are no other numbers with value in the ones or tens places, we focus on the hundreds place. The number 3 in the hundreds place means we have three hundreds. Let’s count by hundreds to see how much that is: 100, 200, 300. See how it works?

Exploring Another Number: 600

Now, let’s look at another number: 600. Here, the number 6 is in the hundreds place. Just like before, the zeros in the ones and tens places don’t have any value. So, we focus on the hundreds place again. The 6 means we have six hundreds. Let’s count by hundreds: 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600. That’s a lot of hundreds!

Try This Challenge!

Are you ready for a little challenge? Let’s think about the number 400. Can you figure out the value of the number 4? Take a moment to think about it. If you need more time, you can pause and think.

Okay, here’s the answer: the number 4 is in the hundreds place, so it means four hundred. Let’s count by hundreds to see: 100, 200, 300, 400. The zeros in the ones and tens places don’t add any value, so the number is 400.

Remember the Place Value

Always remember to look at where the number is placed to know its value. The hundreds place is very important when we’re talking about big numbers like these!

  • Can you think of a time when you used numbers like 100, 200, or 300? Maybe when counting something or playing a game? Share your story!
  • If you could have 300 of anything, what would it be and why? How would you count them to make sure you have exactly 300?
  • Imagine you have 600 blocks. What fun things could you build with them? How would you organize them to make counting easier?
  1. Hundreds Hunt: Go on a number hunt around your home or classroom. Look for numbers that have a digit in the hundreds place. Write down the numbers you find and circle the digit in the hundreds place. Can you say how many hundreds are in each number? For example, if you find the number 250, the hundreds place is 2, which means two hundreds.

  2. Build with Blocks: Use building blocks or small objects to create groups of hundreds. For example, if you have 300, make three groups of 100 blocks each. Try making different numbers like 400 or 600 by creating the correct number of groups. This will help you see how many hundreds are in each number.

  3. Number Line Jump: Draw a number line on a piece of paper or use chalk outside. Mark the numbers 100, 200, 300, up to 600. Start at zero and jump to each hundred as you count out loud. How many jumps does it take to get to 400? How about 600? This activity helps you visualize counting by hundreds.

Welcome to Kids Academy!

When we look at a number like 300, only the three in the hundreds place has any value. There is a zero in the ones place and a zero in the tens place. Let’s have a closer look at 300 to uncover the mystery of the hundreds place.

The hundreds place is the furthest left in our number, which is three hundred. Since there are no other digits of value in either the ones or the tens place, we can focus on the hundreds place. There is a three in the hundreds place. We can count by hundreds to find the value of this digit: 100, 200, 300.

Now, check out this number: six hundred. Only the six in the hundreds place has any value. There is a zero in the ones place and a zero in the tens place. Let’s have a closer look at 600 to uncover the mystery of the hundreds place again.

The hundreds place is the furthest left in the number 600. Since there are no other digits of value in either the ones or the tens place, we can look at the hundreds place again. There is a six in the hundreds place. We can count by hundreds to find the value of this digit: 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600.

I’ll leave you with a challenge: can you tell the value of the digits in the number 400? What’s the value of the four? I’ll give you some time to think, but if you need more time, you can pause the video and answer when you’re ready.

Okay, here’s the answer: the four is in the hundreds place, so it is worth four hundred. We can count by hundreds: one hundred, two hundred, three hundred, four hundred. The ones and tens places have zeros, so there’s no value there. The number is 400.

Remember to look at the place the digit is in before you decide the value of that number. Thanks for watching, boys and girls! See you next time!
