Hi there! I’m Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids team, and I’m here with my friend Sophie. We’re so happy you’re joining us for “Circle Time” today. Let’s say hello to Sophie!
Hi, everyone! I’m Sophie, and I’m thrilled to be here with Caroline for “Circle Time.” Today, we’re going to read a book from the Khan Academy Kids library and do some fun activities. Are you ready?
We’re going to read “Sandy Says.” Sandy is one of my favorite characters. She’s a yellow dingo, which is a friendly wild dog from Australia. Sandy loves math and music, and she’s super fun and kind. Let’s dive into the story!
In the story, Sandy and her friends Reya and Ollo are hanging out together. They decide to play “Simon Says,” a fun game where you have to do what Simon says, but only if you hear the words “Simon says” first.
Sandy starts the game by saying, “Simon says touch your head” and “Simon says shake your hands.” Reya and Ollo follow along, but they want to try something harder. Sandy then says, “Simon says spin around six times,” and they spin until they’re dizzy!
Let’s try spinning around three times together. Ready? One, two, three! Wow, that was fun! Now, Sandy says, “Simon says sing a song and hop on one foot.” Reya and Ollo give it a try, and they think of songs like “Baby Shark” and “The Hello Song.”
Reya then takes a turn as Simon and tricks Sandy and Ollo by saying, “Put your hands on your hips,” without saying “Simon says.” They all laugh and have a great time.
Now, let’s learn some words! The word “shake” starts with the letters S-H, which make the “shh” sound. Can you think of other words that start with “shh”? How about “shoe,” “should,” and “show”?
Another word is “spin,” which starts with S-P, making the “sp” sound. Words like “spot” and “spider” also start with “sp.” Let’s find these words in sentences and practice saying them together!
Now that you know how to play “Simon Says,” you can teach your family and friends. Remember, if someone says “Simon says,” you do the action. If not, you stay still. It’s a fun game to play together!
Thank you for joining us for “Circle Time.” If you want to read more books and play more activities, ask your parents to help you download the Khan Academy Kids app. Before we go, let’s try one more thing. Simon says put your hands on top of your head. Did you do it? Great job!
We hope you had fun today. Let us know what fun things you ask your family to do in “Simon Says.” Thanks for joining us, and we can’t wait to see you again tomorrow. Bye for now from Caroline, Sophie, and the Khan Academy Kids team. Have a great day!
Simon Says Adventure: Create your own “Simon Says” game at home. Ask a family member or friend to be Simon and come up with fun and creative actions. Try to include actions that involve counting or using different parts of the body, like “Simon says jump four times” or “Simon says touch your toes and count to five.” Notice how listening carefully helps you follow the game correctly!
Sound Hunt: Go on a sound hunt around your house or classroom. Look for objects or pictures that start with the “sh” sound, like “shoe” or “shell,” and the “sp” sound, like “spoon” or “spider.” Make a list or draw pictures of the items you find. Share your findings with a friend or family member and practice saying the words together.
Story Time with Sandy: Imagine a new adventure for Sandy the dingo. Draw a picture of Sandy doing something fun, like playing a new game or exploring a new place. Write a sentence or two about what Sandy is doing in your picture. Share your story with someone and ask them what they think Sandy might do next!
