Today’s Story: “Monster Trouble”

Today, we’re reading a fun book called “Monster Trouble” by Lane Fredrickson, with pictures by Michael Robertson. Let’s dive into the story!

Meet Winifred Schnitzel

Winifred Schnitzel is a brave girl who isn’t scared of anything—not even monsters! She loves watching spooky movies and isn’t afraid of thunder or pirates. But every night, some silly monsters try to scare her while she’s trying to sleep.

Monsters Everywhere!

These monsters are funny! Some growl, some are slimy, and some are hairy. Winifred thinks they’re cute, but they keep waking her up at night. She gets so tired that she can’t even enjoy her favorite activities during the day.

Winifred’s Clever Plan

Winifred decides to get smart about these monsters. She orders a book called “Monsters Beware” and makes a sticky trap to catch them. But the monsters are too big, and the trap doesn’t work!

Trying Something New

Next, Winifred tries using stinky cheese to make the monsters sneeze. But the monsters just order some silly food from the Goblin Street Deli instead!

Winifred’s Big Discovery

Winifred is tired of the monsters, so she builds even more traps. But when the monsters come back, she accidentally gives one a big sleepy kiss. Guess what? The monsters don’t like kisses at all! They run away as fast as they can!

Sweet Dreams for Winifred

Now, Winifred sleeps peacefully every night. She’s happy and full of energy during the day. If a monster sneaks in at bedtime, she knows just what to do—give it a kiss! Monsters really don’t like that!

Winifred the Hero

Winifred is my hero because she figured out how to handle those silly monsters. If any monsters come into my room, I’m calling Winifred for help!

  • Why do you think the monsters didn’t like kisses? What are some things you don’t like, and how do you handle them?
  1. Monster Observation Journal: Create a “Monster Observation Journal” where you can draw or write about any imaginary monsters you think of. What do they look like? What sounds do they make? Are they friendly or silly like the ones in Winifred’s story? Share your journal with a friend or family member and see if they can come up with their own monster ideas too!

  2. Build a Monster Trap: Just like Winifred, try to design your own monster trap using materials you find at home. You could use paper, string, boxes, or anything else you can think of. Explain how your trap works and what makes it special. Remember, it’s all about using your imagination and creativity!

  3. Monster-Free Bedtime Routine: Think about what makes you feel safe and happy at bedtime. Create a special bedtime routine that helps you relax and feel ready for sleep, just like Winifred did. You could include reading a favorite book, listening to calming music, or even giving a pretend kiss to any imaginary monsters to send them away!

Today’s book is “Monster Trouble” by Lane Fredrickson, illustrated by Michael Robertson. Let’s get started!

“Monster Trouble” by Lane Fredrickson, illustrated by Michael Robertson.

Winifred Schnitzel was never afraid—not of monsters or ghouls or the noises they made. She loved scary movies, werewolves, thunder, and peg-leg pirates who bury their plunder. Still, Winifred’s bedtime was hardly spook-free. The neighborhood monsters would not let her be. Each night they’d show up and attempt to be scary. Some would growl, some would belt, some were slimy, some hairy.

Winifred thought monsters were cute, but night after night, all those monsters kept creeping into her room, interrupting her sleep. Too tired for math, too exhausted for fun, she finally decided those monsters weren’t done. She ordered a book titled “Monsters Beware” and constructed a sticky string small monster snare.

But that night, the big monsters all showed up first. The sticky string snare got so stretched that it burst! Winifred knew she needed to try something clever, so she brought in some stinky old Limburger cheese. The label said, “Caution: Makes big monsters sneeze!”

But the monsters just called up the Goblin Street Deli and ordered in bagels and fish eyeball jelly. Winifred barely got through the next day. She dozed off in art class and snoozed through ballet. She decided that’s it—she’s got to get tough. She was tired of monsters; enough was enough!

So she built every spook trap in “Monsters Beware” and one of her own called the Prickly Bump Chair. When the monsters showed up with their howling and roaring, Winifred Schnitzel was already snoring. She was dreaming of puppies when a monster went “yes!” She reached out and gave it a big sleepy kiss.

The monster yelled, “Yuck!” All the others were heavy, one gagged, and a big monster shouted, “I’m leaving!” Winifred knew that despite their uniqueness, she discovered that monsters have one silly weakness. So she puckered and pouted and kissed them all good. Those monsters screamed, running as fast as they could!

Now Winifred sleeps very soundly at night. In the daytime, she’s happy and perky and bright. But sometimes she finds that a monster has crept in right around bedtime with a monsterly grin. She ignores all the growling and roaring and hissing since the one thing that all monsters hate most is kissing.

So monsters are real, and you have to kiss them! And I’m afraid of monsters, and I’m scared of kissing. So if any monsters come in my room, I’m gonna call Winifred! Did I mention that she’s my hero?
