In the lesson “Shopping with Daddy,” Mike shares an exciting day out with his sister Pam and their dad as they go shopping. They visit a barbershop for haircuts, a shoe store where they both choose blue sneakers, and enjoy balloons and ice cream, with Pam often mimicking Mike’s choices. The story highlights the fun and playful moments of their shopping adventure while encouraging readers to explore more stories.
  1. What did Mike and Pam do first when they went shopping with Daddy?
  2. Why do you think Pam wanted the same shoes and ice cream as Mike?
  3. What color balloon did Mike choose, and how did he feel when he picked it?

Shopping with Daddy

Hello! My name is Mike, and today is a special day because Daddy is taking my sister Pam and me shopping!

Getting Ready to Go

We jump into our green car, and I shout with excitement, “Yay!” Daddy starts the car, and it goes, “Vroom vroom!”

At the Barbershop

First, we go to the barbershop. I run inside and wait for my turn to get a haircut. Pam holds Daddy’s hand while I get my hair cut. Daddy tells Pam, “Stop wiggling,” but she wiggles even more!

Shoe Store Fun

Next, we visit the shoe store. I get there first, and Pam calls out, “Wait for me!” A nice man measures my feet and then Pam’s feet. My feet are bigger, so I choose blue sneakers. Pam wants blue sneakers too; she’s a copycat!

Balloon Time

Daddy picks some balloons. He chooses a purple one, and I pick a red one. Pam picks a red one too; she’s a copycat again! We run with our balloons, going fast, faster, and even faster!

Ice Cream Treat

Daddy gives Pam his balloon and says it’s time for ice cream. I want chocolate ice cream. Can you guess what Pam wants? Chocolate! She’s a copycat!

  1. Color Hunt: During your next shopping trip with a grown-up, play a color hunt game. Look for items in the store that match the colors of the balloons Mike and Pam picked: purple and red. Can you find something else in the store that is purple or red? Share what you find with your grown-up!

  2. Shoe Size Exploration: At home, measure your feet using a ruler or a tape measure. Compare your foot size with someone else’s in your family. Who has the biggest feet? Who has the smallest? Draw a picture of your shoes and color them in your favorite color, just like Mike and Pam did at the shoe store.

  3. Ice Cream Flavor Experiment: Pretend you’re at the ice cream shop with Mike and Pam. Ask your grown-up to help you make a list of different ice cream flavors you might like to try. If you could create your own ice cream flavor, what would it be? Draw a picture of your special ice cream and give it a fun name!
