Welcome to Story Time!

Hello, friends! Are you ready for a fun story? Today, we’re going to read about a very special donkey. Let’s get started!

The Wonky Donkey

Once upon a time, I was walking down the road and saw a donkey. But this wasn’t just any donkey. This donkey had only three legs! We call him a “wonky donkey” because he walks a little funny.

A Silly Donkey

As I kept walking, I noticed something else. This donkey had only one eye and loved listening to country music. He was a “honky-tonky, winky-wonky donkey!” Isn’t that a funny name?

More Surprises!

Guess what? The donkey was also very tall and slim. But oh no, he smelled really bad! Maybe he forgot to change his socks. Now he was a “stinky, dinky, lanky, honky-tonky, winky-wonky donkey!”

A Cranky Donkey

One morning, the donkey woke up early and didn’t have his coffee. He was feeling a bit grumpy. We call that “cranky.” So now, he was a “cranky, stinky, dinky, lanky, honky-tonky, winky-wonky donkey!”

Always Up to Mischief

This donkey loved to play tricks and have fun. He was always getting into mischief. We say he was “hanky-panky.” So, he became a “hanky-panky, cranky, stinky, dinky, lanky, honky-tonky, winky-wonky donkey!”

A Good-Looking Donkey

Even with all his funny traits, the donkey was quite good-looking. We say he was “spunky.” So, he was a “spunky, hanky-panky, cranky, stinky, dinky, lanky, honky-tonky, winky-wonky donkey!”

Let’s Make Donkey Sounds!

Now, let’s make a donkey sound together! On the count of three: one, two, three! Hee-haw!

  • What do you think makes the Wonky Donkey special and different from other donkeys? Can you think of something special about yourself or someone you know?
  • The Wonky Donkey has many funny traits. Which one do you find the funniest and why? Can you make up a funny name for a donkey using your own ideas?
  • Have you ever felt cranky like the donkey when you didn’t get enough sleep or missed something important? What do you do to feel better when you’re cranky?
  1. Donkey Description Game: Gather some art supplies like crayons, markers, and paper. Ask the children to draw their version of the “Wonky Donkey” based on the story. Encourage them to include all the funny traits mentioned, like the three legs, one eye, and being tall and slim. After drawing, let each child describe their donkey using as many adjectives from the story as they can remember. This activity helps reinforce memory and descriptive skills.

  2. Adjective Hunt: Take the children on a short walk around the classroom or playground. Ask them to find objects or people that they can describe using adjectives, just like in the story. For example, they might find a “shiny, round, red apple” or a “tall, green tree.” Encourage them to use their imagination and come up with funny combinations, similar to the “Wonky Donkey.” This activity promotes observation and creativity.

  3. Role-Playing Fun: Organize a role-playing session where each child gets to act out one of the donkey’s traits. They can take turns being “cranky,” “spunky,” or “hanky-panky.” Provide simple props like a cowboy hat for “honky-tonky” or a sock for “stinky.” This activity encourages empathy and understanding of emotions, as well as boosts confidence in expressing themselves.

Today’s book is “The Wonky Donkey” by Craig Smith, illustrated by Katz Cowley. Let’s get started!

I was walking down the road and I saw a donkey. Oh, that’s not the sound a donkey makes. We get it; this is the sound a donkey makes.

The donkey only had three legs. He was a wonky donkey! I was walking down the road and I saw a donkey. He only had three legs and one eye. He liked to listen to country music. He was a honky-tonky, winky-wonky donkey!

I was walking down the road and I saw a donkey. He only had three legs, one eye, and he liked to listen to country music. He was quite tall and slim. He was a lanky, honky-tonky, winky-wonky donkey!

Whoa, this donkey has seen better days. I wonder what else he’s been through. Let’s find out!

I was walking down the road and I saw a donkey. He only had three legs, one eye, and he liked to listen to country music. He was quite tall and slim, and he smelled really bad. He was a stinky, dinky, lanky, honky-tonky, winky-wonky donkey!

Hey, Ryan, do you see why he smells so bad?

No, because he didn’t brush his teeth?

No, because he didn’t change his socks!

I was walking down the road and I saw a donkey. He only had three legs, one eye, and he liked to listen to country music. He was quite tall and slim, and he smelled really bad. That morning, he got up early and hadn’t had any coffee. He was a cranky, stinky, dinky, lanky, honky-tonky, winky-wonky donkey!

He was a hanky-panky, cranky, stinky, dinky, lanky, honky-tonky, winky-wonky donkey!

You know what I’m going to suggest? Don’t walk down that road anymore! This donkey is a disaster. Just be a bird and fly away!

No, the birds are not the ones telling the story. It’s like a narrator, like a person.

Yeah, because birds wouldn’t walk down the road; they fly!

Anyway, I was walking down the road and I saw a donkey. He only had three legs, one eye, and he liked to listen to country music. Ryan, you know that they want us to do the donkey sound?

No, I know you want the donkey sound.

Okay, together we’ll do it! On three: one, two, three!
