Today’s Story: “Llama Llama Misses Mama”

Today, we’re reading a fun book called “Llama Llama Misses Mama” by Anna Dewdney. Are you ready? Let’s begin!

Getting Ready for School

Our story starts with Llama Llama waking up in bed. It’s a special day because Llama is going to school for the first time! But first, Llama needs to get ready. That means making the bed, finding clothes, brushing teeth, and eating breakfast. Oh no, Llama is running late! Who’s in charge? Mama!

Off to School

Mama drives Llama to school. When they get there, Llama feels a little shy. Mama has to leave, and Llama stays at school with new teachers, new toys, and lots of kids. It’s a bit noisy, and Llama isn’t sure what to do.

Feeling Shy

There are so many things to try, like building a castle with blocks or making a rocket from a box. But Llama feels too shy and tries to hide. The other kids are reading stories on a rug, but Llama doesn’t like the book.

Missing Mama

It’s lunchtime, but Llama doesn’t want to eat. Llama feels alone and misses Mama. Why did Mama leave? Well, Mama has things to do, like taking care of the house and maybe working at a job. But don’t worry, Mama will come back!

Having Fun

Even though Llama misses Mama, there are fun things to do at school! Llama can play outside, try the slide, play tag, jump rope, and play hide-and-seek. There are also bright crayons for drawing and writing.

Mama Comes Back

Guess what? Mama comes back to pick up Llama! Llama is so happy to see Mama again. Llama gives the teacher a goodbye hug and waves to friends. There’s so much to show Mama and so much to say. Llama learns something new: school is fun, and Mama always comes back!

Why School is Fun

When I was in school, I loved it too! Do you know why? Because I got to learn new things and play with my friends. School is a place for fun and learning!

  1. Have you ever felt shy or nervous about going to a new place, like Llama did at school? What helped you feel better?
  2. What are some fun things you like to do at school or with your friends? How do they make you feel happy?
  3. Why do you think it’s important to try new things, even if they seem a little scary at first? Can you think of a time when you tried something new and ended up enjoying it?
  1. Morning Routine Chart: Create a morning routine chart with your child. Use pictures or drawings to represent each task Llama Llama did to get ready for school, like making the bed, brushing teeth, and eating breakfast. Encourage your child to follow their own morning routine using the chart. Ask them, “What do you do each morning to get ready for school?”

  2. Feelings and Faces: Talk about how Llama Llama felt when Mama left. Use paper plates and markers to create different feeling faces, like happy, sad, shy, or excited. Ask your child, “How do you feel when you go to school? Can you show me with your feeling face?” Encourage them to share a time when they felt shy or missed someone and what they did to feel better.

  3. School Adventure Hunt: Plan a mini adventure hunt at home or in the backyard. Hide small toys or objects that represent activities Llama Llama did at school, like crayons for drawing or blocks for building. Give your child clues to find each item. After the hunt, discuss, “What was your favorite activity Llama Llama did at school? Why do you think school can be fun?”

Llama Llama misses Mama. Llama Llama warming bed, wakey-wakey sleepyhead! Llama school begins today. Time to learn, time to play!

Sorry, what you said today? Today’s not good. We need to make the bed, find some clothes, brush our teeth, and eat some breakfast. Whoops, oh no, we’re running late! Why didn’t you wake me up earlier? I don’t watch; I can’t tell time. Who’s in charge here? Mama!

We’re late! This is on you. Drive to school and park the car. Tell the teacher who you are.

Llama Llama feels shy. Mama Llama goes away. Llama Llama has to stay. Strange new teachers, strange new toys, lots of kids and lots of noise. What would Llama like to do? Llama Llama feels so new.

Build a castle out of blocks? Make a rocket from a box? Llama Llama shakes his head. Llama walks away instead. Here’s a little chugga choo with a captain and a crew.

What does Llama like? Llama Llama tries to hide. Reading stories on the rug, kids are cuddled, sitting snug.

Llama Llama hates that book!

Time for lunch now. Find a seat. Llama doesn’t want to eat. Llama makes a little moan. Llama Llama feels alone. Llama misses Mama.

Why did Mama Llama go? Well, she has things to do. She’s already been through school.

But why? Because somebody has to take care of the house, and maybe she has a job.

Yeah, but why? Things cost money, and the house needs to be taken care of.

Well, why? I just told you!

But your answers are too long. Keep it simple.

I don’t know. Me neither. It’s too much for little Llama.

Llama Llama, it’s okay to miss your Mama, but don’t forget when the day is through, she will come right back to you.

Wait, will you see the river?

Alright, you’re crying. Llama Llama, please don’t fuss. Have some fun and play with us!

Put on coats and run outside. See the playhouse, try the slide, tag and jump rope, hide-and-seek. Close your eyes and do not peek!

Now it’s time to draw and write. Great big crayons, colors bright.

Mama Llama, you came back!

Teacher gets a goodbye hug. Wave to friends on the reading rug. Climb the playhouse with the slide. See if Mama fits inside.

Lots to show and lots to say. Back again another day. Llama finds out something new: he loves Mama and school too!

You know, when I was in school, I loved it too!

But why? I got to learn new stuff!

But why? Play with my friends!

Oh, why?

I just gave you a bunch of reasons!

I just want one simple word: why?

This is fun!

See, I love school too!

Do you want to know why?
