In this Circle Time lesson, Caroline and Sophie introduce the importance of cleaning up the beach through the story “Team Leader,” where friends work together to tidy up their environment. The lesson emphasizes the significance of recycling to protect marine life and offers practical tips for reducing plastic waste, such as using reusable containers and bags. Additionally, children are encouraged to engage in creative projects using recycled materials, showcasing their own creations during a Show & Tell segment.
  1. What did Ollo and his friends do to help clean the beach?
  2. Why is it important to recycle things like paper and plastic?
  3. Can you think of a fun project you could make using recycled materials?

Welcome to Circle Time!

Hello, friends! Welcome to Circle Time. I’m Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids team, and today I have Sophie with me. Hi, Sophie!

“Hi, Caroline. Hi, friends. I’m so excited to be here for a day at Circle Time. It looks like we might be going to the beach today.”

“We are! Let’s put our sunglasses on and be sun safe with our sunglasses and hats, if you have one.”

Cleaning Up the Beach

Today, we’re going to read a story called “Team Leader” about our friends cleaning up the beach. Let’s dive into it!

“Team Leader” by Cynthia Platt. Ollo, Sandy, and Peck arrived at the beach one day and noticed something was off. “The beach is a mess,” Ollo exclaimed. “Somebody needs to clean it up.” “We can all clean the beach,” Peck said. “Yes,” Ollo agreed. “Let’s get started right away.”

Ollo wasn’t sure where to start, and he realized his friends expected him to lead. “Just look around and see what you want to clean,” Ollo told them. Peck began working right away, but Ollo noticed Sandy was sweeping away shells and rocks. “Sandy, you shouldn’t sweep away shells and rocks,” Ollo told her. “They belong on the beach.”

Being a Leader

Ollo realized that being a leader wasn’t easy, but he wanted the beach to be clean for everyone. He thought a good leader should listen and pay attention to the team. “We need a plan,” Ollo told his friends. They decided to pick up litter, move seaweed off the ramp, and paint a bench. Together, they worked hard and cleaned up the beach.

Recycling and Its Importance

During their cleanup, Sandy carried a recycling bin. Do you know what recycling is? It’s when we take trash and turn it into something new. You can recycle things like paper, cardboard, and certain plastics. Look for the recycling symbol to know what can be recycled.

Recycling helps reduce the amount of trash that ends up in the ocean, which can harm sea creatures. For example, a sea turtle might mistake a plastic bag for a jellyfish and eat it, which can make the turtle sick.

Ways to Reduce Plastic Waste

You can help by using less plastic. Here are some ideas:

  • Sip from a cup, not a plastic straw.
  • Pack food in reusable containers.
  • Bring a reusable bag to the store.
  • Use a reusable water bottle.

Creative Projects with Recycled Materials

People can also use recycled materials to make creative projects. For example, you can make art or build things like a puppet show stage or a toy car using cardboard boxes and other materials.

Our friend Sam showed us how to make a collage using magazine paper. You can cut out colorful pieces and glue them onto a canvas to create beautiful art.

Show & Tell

We have some friends who shared their amazing projects made from recycled materials:

  • Maya created an artwork about corals and the sea.
  • Kenzie made a guitar using a tissue box and string.
  • Vier made a turtle and a car using paper bowls and boxes.
  • Nolan built “Stuffy World” for his stuffed animals using cardboard boxes.
  • Liliana and Theodore made a puppet show stage with Khan Academy characters.

Goodbye for Now

Thank you for joining us at Circle Time. We hope you enjoyed learning about cleaning up the beach, recycling, and making creative projects. Remember, you can make a difference by recycling and reusing materials. Goodbye for now, and see you next time!

  • Have you ever been to the beach? What did you see there, and did you notice anything that needed cleaning up?
  • Why do you think it’s important to recycle and keep places like the beach clean? Can you think of ways you can help at home or in your community?
  • What creative project would you like to make using recycled materials? What materials would you use, and how would you build it?
  1. Beach Cleanup Simulation: Gather some small items like paper scraps, bottle caps, and leaves. Create a mini “beach” in a sandbox or a small area in your yard. Ask the children to pretend they are Ollo and his friends, and work together to clean up the beach. Discuss which items should be recycled and which should be left as they are part of nature. This activity helps children understand the importance of teamwork and decision-making in cleaning up the environment.
  2. Recycling Detective: Go on a “recycling hunt” around your home or classroom. Look for items that have the recycling symbol on them. Make a list or draw pictures of these items. Discuss why recycling is important and how it helps protect sea creatures like turtles. Encourage the children to think about how they can reduce waste by using reusable items.
  3. Creative Reuse Challenge: Provide children with clean, recyclable materials like cardboard boxes, paper rolls, and plastic containers. Challenge them to create something new, such as a toy or an art project. Encourage them to think about how they can use these materials in a fun and creative way, just like Sam did with his collage. This activity promotes creativity and reinforces the concept of reusing materials.
