Thank you for joining us to read a story. Today, we have a special book called “Red and the City” by Marie Voigt. Let’s dive into the story!
Once upon a time, there was a girl named Red. She lived with her mom and her dog, Woody, near the big city.
One day, Red’s mom said, “Red, please go visit Grandma and give her this cake. Take Woody with you and remember to follow the hard flowers, be careful when crossing the road, stay on the path, and don’t talk to strangers.”
After walking for a while, Red felt hungry. “I’ll just have a little bit of cake,” she thought. But the cake was so yummy that she ate it all!
“Oh no! No more cake for Grandma! What should I do now?” Red wondered. “I know! I’ll buy her some hard flowers. They’re not far from the path. I’ll be back soon.”
But Red got distracted by the city. “Oh, city, what shiny toys you have! Oh, city, what exciting things you have! Oh, city, what tasty food you have!”
Soon, Red was lost.
“Wake up, wake up!” barked Woody. When Red opened her eyes, she remembered what was important. Her heart felt warm, and she found her way back to the path.
Red walked straight to Grandma’s house without getting lost again.
“Oh Grandma, I’m sorry I’m late. I got lost in the city,” said Red.
“I know,” said Grandma. “The city once confused me too.”
They enjoyed the cake Grandma had baked for Red and talked about all the fun things they could do in the city together.
And that’s the story of Red and the City. Sometimes we get distracted, but it’s okay as long as we remember to find our way back.

City Adventure Map: Create a simple map of a city using paper and crayons. Include paths, buildings, and a special spot for Grandma’s house. Ask the children to guide Red and Woody through the city, following the paths and avoiding distractions. Discuss how staying on the path helps Red reach her destination safely. Encourage them to think about how they can stay focused on tasks in their own lives.
Hero Role Play: Organize a role-playing activity where each child gets to be a hero. Provide simple costumes or props like capes or hats. Ask them to act out scenarios where they help someone in need, like picking up litter in a park or helping a friend who is sad. After the activity, discuss how being a hero can be as simple as being kind and helpful in everyday situations.
Nature Walk Observation: Take the children on a short nature walk around the school or a nearby park. Ask them to observe and point out things that need care, like plants that need water or trash that needs picking up. Discuss how heroes take care of nature and how they can be heroes by helping the environment. Encourage them to think of small actions they can take to protect the earth.

“Red and the City”
Once there was a girl named Red who lived with her mom and her dog, Woody, on the edge of the city.
“Red,” said her mom one day, “go visit Grandma and give her this cake. Take Woody with you and remember to follow the hard flowers, take care when crossing the road, stay on the path, and don’t talk to anyone.”
After a while, Red started feeling hungry. “I will only have a bit of cake,” Red said, but the cake was very tasty, and before Red knew it, she had eaten it all.
“Oh no! No more cake for Grandma! Oh no, I’ve eaten my present for Grandma,” said Red. “What shall I do now? I know! I’ll buy her some hard flowers. They’re not far from the path. I’ll be back in a minute.”
But Red quickly forgot about the flowers.
“Oh, city, what shiny toys you have! All the better to dazzle you with. Oh, city, what shocking news you have! All the better to surprise you with. Oh, city, what tempting food you have! All the better to distract you with.”
And then Red was lost.
“Wake up, wake up!” barked Woody. When Red opened her eyes, she remembered all that truly mattered to her. Her heart shone brightly, and she was able to find her path.
Red walked straight to Grandma’s without straying from her path once.
“Oh Grandma, I’m sorry I’m late. I was foolish and got lost in the city.”
“I know,” said Grandma. “It once swallowed me up too.”
They then enjoyed the cake Grandma had baked for Red earlier that day and talked about all the wonderful things they could do in the city together.
Once there was a girl named Red, and that was “Red and the City.” Sometimes we get distracted, but that’s okay, as long as you remember the lessons you’ve learned and come back to the right path.
