In the “Relaxation for Kids – The Koeppen Technique (Part 1)” lesson, children learn simple techniques to help relax their arms, mouth, and tummy, especially during stressful moments like arguments or disappointing test results. The session guides them through imaginative exercises, such as stretching like a sleepy kitten and visualizing an elephant stepping on their tummy, to promote relaxation and awareness of their bodies. By the end, kids are encouraged to practice these techniques whenever they feel tense, fostering a sense of calm and well-being.
  1. What did we learn about how our bodies feel when we are nervous or upset?
  2. Can you remember one way we relaxed our arms, mouth, or tummy?
  3. How do you think relaxing can help us feel better after a tough day?

Relaxation for Kids – The Koeppen Technique (Part 1)

Welcome to our fun relaxation session! Today, we’re going to learn how to help our arms, mouth, and tummy feel calm and relaxed. Sometimes, when we have a little argument with a friend or don’t do as well as we hoped on a test, our muscles can get tight without us even knowing. This can make us feel a bit uncomfortable. But don’t worry! If we learn how to relax when we’re nervous or upset, we can feel better quickly.

Getting Ready to Relax

First, find a quiet place where you can sit comfortably. Take a deep breath in and notice how your tummy moves. Now, breathe out slowly through your nose. Let’s get started!

Relaxing Our Arms

Imagine you’re a sleepy kitten who wants to stretch. Stretch your arms out in front of you, then lift them above your head and behind it. Feel your shoulders stretching. Now, let your arms drop down at the same time. Great job! Notice how your shoulders feel more relaxed now.

Relaxing Our Mouth

Picture having a piece of gum in your mouth. It’s really tough to chew. Give it a strong bite and let your neck muscles help you. Now, pause and relax your jaw. Can you feel how your jaw is more relaxed?

Relaxing Our Tummy

Imagine you’re lying on soft grass. Oh look, there’s an elephant walking by! He accidentally steps on your tummy. Don’t move! Try to tighten your tummy muscles and hold them tight for a moment. Now, relax your tummy as much as you can. Doesn’t that feel better?

Finishing Up

Our relaxation session is over. Did you notice how tense you were before and how you managed to relax your muscles? Stay still with your eyes open until you feel ready to sit up. If you enjoyed this exercise, you can do it as many times as you like during the day.

  • Can you think of a time when you felt your muscles get tight, like when you’re nervous or upset? What did you do to help yourself feel better?
  • What other animals or things can you imagine to help you relax your body, like the sleepy kitten or the elephant in the story?
  • How do you feel after trying these relaxation exercises? Can you think of a time during your day when you might want to use them?
  1. Stretch Like a Cat: Find a cozy spot at home or outside where you can lie down. Imagine you’re a cat waking up from a nap. Stretch your arms and legs as far as you can, just like a cat would. Hold the stretch for a few seconds, then relax. Repeat this a few times. How does your body feel after stretching like a cat?

  2. Chew the Imaginary Gum: Pretend you have a big piece of gum in your mouth. Chew it slowly and really feel your jaw working. After a few seconds, stop and let your mouth relax. Try this with your eyes closed and notice the difference in how your face feels before and after.

  3. Tummy Tightening Game: Lie down on your back and place a small stuffed animal on your tummy. Tighten your tummy muscles to lift the stuffed animal up, then relax to let it down gently. Do this a few times and see if you can keep the stuffed animal balanced. How does your tummy feel after this exercise?

Here’s a sanitized version of the YouTube transcript:

Welcome to this relaxation session. Today, we’re going to show you how to relax your arms, mouth, and stomach. When you have a disagreement with a friend or don’t perform well in your exams, your muscles can tense up, even if you don’t notice it. This can make you feel uncomfortable. If you learn how to relax when you feel nervous or angry, you will be able to manage the tension and feel better right away.

Before we start, find a quiet spot and sit comfortably. Now, breathe in slowly and notice how your tummy moves. Breathe out through your nose little by little.

Let’s start picturing different situations. Imagine you’re a lazy kitten and you want to stretch. Stretch out both your arms in front of you, then move them above your head and behind it. Feel how your shoulders stretch. Now let both your arms drop at the same time. Well done! Feel how your shoulders are now more relaxed than before.

Imagine you have a piece of gum in your mouth. It’s hard to chew. Give the gum a strong bite and let your neck muscles help you. Now pause for a moment and relax your jaw. Notice how your jaw feels more relaxed.

Now, imagine you’re lying on the grass. Look, there’s an elephant coming your way. He didn’t see you and put his foot on your stomach. Don’t move. Try to tense your stomach muscles and keep them tense for a bit. Now relax your stomach as much as you can. It feels better, doesn’t it?

Our session is over. Did you feel how tense you were before and how you managed to relax your muscles? Now stay still with your eyes open until you feel ready to sit up. If you liked this exercise, feel free to repeat it as many times as you want throughout the day.
