A Big Surprise

Robert loves the roses on his cake, so he takes a big sniff. Suddenly, his eyes start to itch, and his nose begins to tickle. Uh-oh! Robert sneezes a giant sneeze! The cake and the roses go flying everywhere, and Robert falls down. His mom calls the doctor to see what’s wrong.

The doctor says, “Robert, you have too many roses around you. You need to go to the city.” So, Robert says goodbye to his parents and heads to the city to find a job.

Robert’s Adventures in the City

In the city, Robert finds a job with a milkman. He’s happy until he sees a man with a rose in his coat. Oh no! Robert sneezes again, and the milk goes everywhere. The milkman tells Robert he can’t work there anymore.

Robert tries to find another job. He becomes a riding horse and enjoys it until a lady asks him to take her to the roses. Robert sneezes again, and he loses his job.

Becoming a Hero

Today, I want to dedicate this book to Devin and Brady Pomeroy from Gig Harbor, Washington. You guys are awesome! Thanks for sending today’s book. It’s “Robert the Rose Horse” by Joan Heil Brunner, illustrated by P.D. Eastman. Let’s get started!

Robert was a happy little horse who lived on a farm with his mother and father. One day, Robert had a birthday party, and all his farm friends came to celebrate. They had a big cake, and everyone sang “Happy Birthday” to him. The cake was beautiful, decorated with big red roses. Robert liked those roses and took a big sniff. Suddenly, he felt funny—his eyes began to itch, and his nose started to tickle.

Robert sneezed! What a sneeze it was! The cake went flying, and so did the roses. Robert fell down flat. His mother called the doctor, who examined him and said, “I know what made him sneeze. You have too many roses on this farm. You must go to the city.”

So, Robert had to leave. He said goodbye to his parents, assuring them he would be alright and find work in the city. Robert did find a job with a milkman, and he was happy. But one day, he encountered a man with a rose in his coat. Once again, Robert felt that funny feeling, and he sneezed, causing a mess with the milk.

The milkman told Robert he could no longer work for him. Robert searched for another job, but it was hard for a horse to find work. Eventually, he found a job as a riding horse. He did everything he was told and enjoyed the work. However, one day, a woman asked him to take her to the roses. Once again, he felt that funny feeling and sneezed, causing another mishap.

Out of work again, Robert continued to search until he saw a job as a police horse. He was good at it and helped catch bank robbers by sneezing at the right moment, which startled them and allowed him to stop them.

The next day, there was a party for Robert. His parents, friends, and even the doctor came to celebrate. The doctor presented Robert with roses, but this time, Robert didn’t sneeze. He had finally outgrown his allergy!

And that’s the story of “Robert the Rose Horse” by Joan Heil Brunner, illustrated by P.D. Eastman.
