In this lesson, children are introduced to Rocco the Meerkat, who guides them through an exploration of feelings and emotions in the story “Rocco Discovers Feelings and Emotions.” Through Rocco’s adventures, children learn about sensations like hunger, the warmth of summer, and the importance of mindfulness in understanding their emotions. The lesson encourages kids to reflect on their feelings by keeping a feelings diary, promoting emotional awareness and gratitude.
  1. What makes you feel happy like Rocco?
  2. Can you think of a time when you felt cold or warm, just like Rocco?
  3. What funny things do you like to imagine, like Rocco’s silly hawk dance?

Welcome to Storytime with Rocco!

Hello, friends! How are you today? Have you read any books lately? If not, that’s okay because we’re going to read a fun story together right now. It’s always nice to sit down, relax, and enjoy a good book, don’t you think?

Meet Rocco the Meerkat

Today, we’re going to read a book called “Rocco Discovers Feelings and Emotions” by Jan P. Emily. Are you ready to join Rocco on an exciting adventure? Let’s go!

Exploring Sensations

Rocco is a friendly meerkat who wants to explore feelings and emotions with us. Did you know that we can feel things without even thinking about them? These are called sensations.

One sensation we all know is hunger. When Rocco feels hungry, his tummy makes funny noises. Can you guess what Rocco’s favorite food is? It’s insects! Yum! What’s your favorite food?

Warm and Cold Sensations

Rocco doesn’t like feeling cold. Do you like the cold? Rocco loves summer because he can enjoy the warm sunshine. When it’s cold, he likes to snuggle up with his family to feel safe and cozy. Do you like to snuggle too?

Understanding Emotions

Now, let’s talk about emotions. Emotions are feelings we get when we think about something. Sometimes, just thinking about something can make us feel happy or sad.

Rocco feels happy when he thinks about his birthday because all his friends come to celebrate with him. What makes you feel happy?

Mindfulness and Thoughts

When we take a moment to think about our thoughts, it’s called mindfulness. Isn’t that interesting? Sometimes, Rocco thinks about things that make him feel scared, like a big hawk. But then he remembers that it’s just a thought, and he feels better.

Rocco likes to imagine funny things, like a hawk doing a silly dance. That makes him laugh! What funny things do you like to think about?

Time for Bed

Now it’s time for Rocco to go to bed. He’s going to snuggle up and have sweet dreams. Thank you for exploring feelings and emotions with Rocco today!

Keep a Feelings Diary

Guess what? You can keep a feelings diary too! Before bedtime, you can write about your feelings with your family. It’s a great way to remember the happy moments and be thankful for them.

Try it out! You might find it fun and want to do it every day!

Goodbye for Now!

Thank you for reading with us! Take care of yourself and your family, and we’ll see you again soon. Bye-bye!

  1. Rocco the meerkat feels happy when he thinks about his birthday. What are some things that make you feel happy, and why do they make you feel that way?
  2. Rocco likes to imagine funny things, like a hawk doing a silly dance. Can you think of something funny or silly that makes you laugh? Share it with your friends or family!
  3. Rocco feels cozy when he snuggles with his family. What are some things you like to do to feel safe and cozy? Do you have a favorite blanket or toy that helps?
  1. Feelings and Emotions Collage: Gather some old magazines, newspapers, or printed images. With the help of an adult, cut out pictures that show different emotions like happiness, sadness, excitement, or surprise. Create a collage by gluing these pictures onto a large piece of paper. Talk about each emotion and what might make someone feel that way. Display your collage at home and add new pictures whenever you discover a new emotion!

  2. Sensations Scavenger Hunt: Go on a scavenger hunt around your home or garden to find things that give you different sensations. Can you find something that feels warm, like a cozy blanket, or something cold, like an ice cube? What about something soft, like a teddy bear, or something rough, like a rock? Share your findings with your family and talk about how each sensation makes you feel.

  3. Mindfulness Moment: Find a quiet spot to sit comfortably. Close your eyes and take a deep breath. Think about a happy memory, like a fun day at the park or a birthday party. Imagine it in your mind and notice how it makes you feel. Now, think of something silly, like a dancing animal, and see if it makes you laugh. Share your thoughts with a friend or family member and ask them what makes them feel happy or laugh.

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

Let’s take a look!

“Rocco Discovers Feelings and Emotions” by Jan P. Emily.

Hello, I’m the meerkat Rocco! I’m happy that you’re joining me on an expedition today. Are you ready? Then let’s go!

Today, let’s explore our sensations and emotions. Let’s find out together what they are. It’s going to be fun! Did you know that we can feel whether we like something or not without thinking about it? That’s what we call sensations.

Come on, let’s look at this together! One sensation you will definitely know, but I’m sure you don’t like it, is hunger. I don’t like to feel hungry either! When I’m hungry, my tummy grumbles. Can you guess what my favorite food is? My favorite food is insects! They’re so delicious when I feel hunger in my tummy. Yum! What is your favorite food?

Now that I know what your favorite food is, I want to tell you a secret: cold is a sensation that I do not like at all. You know what I hate? The cold! Do you like the cold? Now that you know my secret, you can certainly guess which season I like best. Yes, that’s right—summer! I love to relax in the warm sun and feel the sunshine.

You know what? That sounds exactly like me! Does it sound like you? When it’s too cold for me, I also like to snuggle up to my mom or dad. Then I feel safe and secure. I love doing that with my kids too.

Besides hunger, cold, and heat, there are many more sensations. But what exactly are emotions? Many do not know the difference between sensations and emotions, but since we are both researchers, we definitely want to know!

Sometimes we think about something, and we can feel whether we like that thought or not. That is what we call emotions. One thought is enough to make us feel good or bad, even though nothing has happened yet. Isn’t that exciting?

I always have very nice emotions when I think about my birthday. I feel great joy because all my friends come to visit me. We really let it rock! When I think of all the gifts and treats waiting for me on my birthday, I also feel great thankfulness. What kind of thoughts give you joy?

When you have a moment of silence, you can observe what thought is in your head right now. Adults call this mindfulness. Isn’t that exciting?

But sometimes I have thoughts that are not so nice. Yesterday, I lay in bed and thought about a huge hawk. I felt fear. As a meerkat, I don’t like hawks so much; they can harm me. Then I remember that the fear of the hawk only comes from my thoughts. Once I realized that, I immediately felt more comfortable. After all, thoughts are harmless, even if they don’t always feel great.

When I’m lying in my meerkat tunnel tonight, I prefer to think about something funny. For example, that the hawk looks like a guinea pig with wings and does a funny dance for me! That brings joy right away! Haha, that’s funny!

But now it’s already so late, and my eyes are getting tired. Thank you for discovering feelings and emotions with me! I’m going to make myself really comfortable in my bed now, so I will sleep well and have a fun day tomorrow. Good night and have sweet dreams!

Yours, Rocco.

And guess what? The rest of the book are actually pages for your feelings. It’s called a feelings diary, and you can fill it out with your mommy, daddy, grandma, grandpa, brother, or sister before bedtime. You can write about your feelings, what you were thinking about today, and your three most pleasant feelings. You know what? That makes you reflect and really be grateful for what you have in your life.
