Ryan Loves to Ride

Ryan loves riding her bike everywhere! She rides around her neighborhood, to the park, and even inside her house. But her favorite thing is mountain biking on trails!

Getting Ready for the Adventure

Ryan is so excited to go mountain biking that she wears her helmet to breakfast. She knows she needs lots of energy, so she helps her mom make a yummy breakfast with eggs, spinach, tomatoes, and banana pancakes. She even shares blueberries with her dog, Charlie!

Time to Hit the Trails

After breakfast, Ryan and her dad check their bikes. Oh no, Ryan’s tire is flat! But she knows just what to do. She pumps it up, and they’re ready to go. “Helmets? Check! Shoes? Check! Water? Check!” says Ryan. Off they go to the trail!

Adventure in the Forest

Ryan, her mom, and dad ride through twisty paths with tall trees all around. Ryan loves the sound of leaves rustling and birds chirping. She even rides through a puddle and gets muddy, which she thinks is so much fun!

A Brave Choice

Ryan comes to a fork in the trail. Should she take the easy path or try the rocky one? Feeling brave, she chooses the rocks. Bump, bump, bump! But oops, she falls and scrapes her knee. Ouch! But Ryan is tough. She takes deep breaths, brushes herself off, and gets back on her bike.

Meeting New Friends

Ryan sees hikers on the trail. “Good morning!” she says, letting them pass. “Thank you!” they reply. Ryan is happy to share the trail.

Climbing the Big Hill

Here comes a big hill! Ryan pedals hard, push, push, push! Her legs and lungs work hard, and she makes it to the top. The view is amazing! “I love mountain biking!” she shouts.

Zooming Downhill

After a drink of water, Ryan zooms downhill. The wind feels cool on her face. “I feel free!” she giggles.

Back Home

Back home, Ryan cleans her bike with soapy water. She tells Charlie all about her adventure, and Charlie gives her a big, wet kiss on her knee.

Sweet Dreams

At bedtime, Ryan snuggles under her covers. She closes her eyes and dreams of biking through the forest. “I love mountain biking,” she whispers as she falls asleep.

Use toy bikes or small objects to navigate the map. Discuss with your friends or family which path you would choose and why. What do you think you might see or hear on your adventure?

  2. Healthy Breakfast Challenge: Just like Ryan, start your day with a healthy breakfast. With the help of an adult, try making a simple breakfast that includes fruits or vegetables. Talk about why it’s important to eat healthy foods before doing something active. What are your favorite healthy foods that give you energy?

  3. Nature Sounds Hunt: Go on a short walk with an adult and listen to the sounds around you, just like Ryan did on her bike ride. Can you hear birds chirping, leaves rustling, or other nature sounds? Draw a picture of what you hear or write down the sounds you notice. How do these sounds make you feel?

Hi everyone! Welcome back to the Storytime Family. How are you all doing today? It is beautiful here, 23° and perfectly sunny. I hope you’re having a super day! Are you ready to sit down and read with us? Today we have a book called “Ryan Goes Mountain Biking” by Katie Dalton and Craig Freedman. Shall we get started?

Ryan spends a lot of time on two wheels. She loves riding through her neighborhood, riding to the park, and even riding down the hallway in her house. But what Ryan loves most of all is riding on trails. Ryan loves mountain biking!

She is so excited to go mountain biking this morning that she wears her helmet to breakfast. “It takes a lot of energy to mountain bike,” says Ryan. “My body needs fuel!”

Crack, sizzle, stir! Ryan helps Mommy scramble eggs with spinach and tomatoes. Ryan spreads butter on a banana pancake and fills a bowl with sweet blueberries. She shares some blueberries with Charlie.

After breakfast, Ryan and Daddy inspect the bikes. Uh-oh, your tire is flat, says Daddy. Ryan gets the pump. “I’ll add air,” she says. “Ready to go, Mommy?”

“Helmets? Check! Shoes? Check! Water? Check! All ready!” says Ryan. They park their car at the trailhead, and Ryan chooses the route. “I’m in the mood for hills!” she leads the way.

Ryan, Mommy, and Daddy cruise along a twisty path surrounded by tall trees. “Those pines are gigantic!” says Ryan. She rides through a puddle, and mud splashes onto her legs. Ryan loves that feeling! She hears leaves rustling, birds chirping, and the crunch of the earth beneath her tires. Ryan loves those sounds.

At a fork in the trail, Ryan has a choice to make. Should she follow the easy path or try to make it over those rocks? She’s feeling brave! Bump, bump, bump! Up and over the rocks she goes. She’s almost made it until—whoa! Ryan loses her balance and tumbles off her bike. Ouch! Her knee is scraped and stings a little.

Mommy and Daddy sit with Ryan while she takes a few slow, deep breaths. “I’m okay now,” says Ryan. “That happens sometimes.” She brushes herself off and hops back on her bike.

Ryan spots hikers ahead. “Good morning!” Ryan calls out as she scoots aside so the hikers can pass. “Thank you!” the hikers respond. “Have a fun ride!”

Here comes the steep hill! Ryan pedals hard—push, push, push! Her breathing gets faster, and her legs and lungs work to carry her up, up, up. Ryan is strong! She reaches the top, and the view is spectacular. “I love mountain biking!” she exclaims.

She takes a drink of cold water. How refreshing! It’s all downhill from here. Zoom! Ryan rides fast; the air is cool against her sweaty skin. “I feel free!”

Back home, Ryan fills a bucket with suds. “Bikes are clean!” she tells Charlie about the adventure. Charlie wags her tail and gives Ryan’s knee a big, sloppy kiss.

The ride may be over, but Ryan feels happy all day long. That is the magic of mountain biking!

At bedtime, Mommy and Daddy tuck Ryan under the covers. She closes her eyes, but instead of darkness, Ryan sees the trail she’s climbing. She’s coasting and weaving through the forest. “I love mountain biking,” Ryan whispers as she drifts off into dreamland.
