In the lesson “Welcome to Storytime!”, children are introduced to the delightful story “Sam’s First Word” by B. Bird, which follows Baby Sam as she explores her abilities and the excitement of her family as they anticipate her first word. Despite their hopes for her to say “Mama” or “Papa,” Sam humorously surprises everyone by repeatedly saying “Poop,” ultimately capturing their attention and bringing joy to the moment. The lesson concludes by encouraging children to share their own first words, fostering engagement and connection.
  1. What fun things can you do like Baby Sam?
  2. What do you think your first word was or will be?
  3. How do you feel when you learn something new like Sam did?

Welcome to Storytime!

Hello, friends! How are you today? Is the sun shining where you are? It’s a lovely day here, and I might go for a walk later. What fun things are you going to do today? Thank you for joining us to read a story together!

Sam’s First Word

Today, we have a special story called “Sam’s First Word” by B. Bird, with pictures by Holly Hatam. Let’s begin!

Meet Baby Sam

Once upon a time, there was a new baby named Sam. Sam could do lots of fun things! She could wave her arms, clap her hands, and even take off her diaper. The big people in Sam’s family were always so happy when she did something new. They would smile, laugh, and cheer, “You can do it, go Sam!” They were excited to see what she would do next. Maybe she would say her first word!

What Will Sam Say?

“I hope you’ll say Mama,” said Mama.

“I hope you’ll say Papa,” said Papa.

“I hope you’ll say Nana,” said Nana.

“I hope you’ll say Mr. Theotokoulos,” said Mr. Theotokoulos, their neighbor.

Sam said, “Poop,” but no one noticed. They were busy thinking about what she might say next.

Trying to Get Sam’s Attention

“I will sing a song for Sam,” said Mama. Mama’s song had lots of “Mama” words.

Sam said, “Poop,” and waved her hands, but Mama kept singing.

“I will tell Sam a story,” said Papa. Papa’s story had lots of “Papa” words.

Sam said, “Poop,” and clapped her hands, but Papa kept talking.

“I will paint a picture for Sam,” said Nana. She painted “Nana” many times in the living room.

Sam said, “Poop,” and pointed to her diaper, but Nana didn’t notice because Sam couldn’t read yet.

“I will recite a poem for Sam,” said Mr. Theotokoulos. His poem had lots of “Mister” and “Theotokoulos” words.

Sam didn’t listen; she was thinking about how to get what she wanted.

Sam’s Big Announcement

Sam tried waving her arms and clapping her hands. There was only one thing left to do.

“Poop,” Sam announced. Mama stopped singing, Papa stopped talking, Nana stopped painting, and Mr. Theotokoulos stopped his poem.

“Poop,” said Mama.

“Poop,” said Papa.

“Poop,” said Nana.

Mr. Theotokoulos finished his poem.

“Poop,” they all agreed!

Sam smiled, laughed, and cheered. She wondered what she would say next!

What Was Your First Word?

And that was the story of Sam’s first word. Do you remember your first word? Or have you said your first word yet? We’d love to hear about it!

Thank you for reading with us today! We hope you enjoyed the story. Take care and see you next time. Bye-bye!

  • What do you think Sam was trying to tell her family when she kept saying “Poop”? Have you ever tried to tell someone something important, and they didn’t understand at first?
  • Sam’s family was very excited to hear her first word. Can you think of a time when you learned something new and everyone was happy for you? What was it?
  • If you could teach Sam a new word, what word would you choose and why? How would you help her learn it?
  1. Word Hunt: Let’s go on a word hunt! With the help of a grown-up, look around your home for things you can name. Try to say the name of each object you find. Can you find something that starts with the same letter as your name? Share your discoveries with your friends or family!

  2. Storytime Role Play: Pretend to be a character from the story! You can be Sam, Mama, Papa, Nana, or even Mr. Theotokoulos. Act out a scene from the story with your friends or family. What would you say if you were Sam? How would you get everyone’s attention?

  3. First Word Memory: Ask your family about your first word. What was it? When did you say it? How did your family react? Draw a picture of you saying your first word and share the story with your class or friends.

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

“Sam’s First Word”

There was once a new baby. Her name was Sam. Sam could do many things. She could wave her arms, clap her hands, and take off her diaper. The big people in Sam’s family were always excited when she did something new. They smiled, they laughed, and they cheered, “You can do it, go Sam!” They wondered what she would do next. Perhaps she would say her first word.

“I hope you’ll be Mama,” said Mama.
“I hope you’ll be Papa,” said Papa.
“I hope you’ll be Nana,” said Nana.
“I hope you’ll be Mr. Theotokoulos,” said Mr. Theotokoulos, their next-door neighbor.

“Poop,” said Sam, but no one paid any attention. They were busy thinking about how to get what she wanted.

“I will sing a song for Sam,” said Mama. Mama’s song had 63 words, all of them were “Mama.”
“Poop,” said Sam. She waved her hands to get Mama’s attention, but Mama was too busy singing.

“I will tell Sam a story,” said Papa. Papa’s story had 203 words, all of them were “Papa.”
“Poop,” said Sam. She clapped her hands to get Papa’s attention, but Papa was too busy telling his story.

“I will paint a picture for Sam,” said Nana. She painted “Nana” 86 times in the living room.
“Poop,” said Sam. She pointed to her diaper. Nana didn’t pay any attention because she had just remembered that Sam couldn’t read.

“I will recite a poem for Sam,” said Mr. Theotokoulos. His poem had 44 words: 22 of them were “Mister,” and the other 22 were “Theotokoulos.” But Sam didn’t pay any attention; she was busy thinking about how to get what she wanted.

She had tried waving her arms, she had tried clapping her hands. There was only one thing left to do.

“Poop,” Sam announced. Mama stopped singing, Papa stopped talking, Nana stopped painting, and Mr. Theotokoulos lowered his voice.

“Poop,” said Mama.
“Poop,” said Papa.
“Poop,” said Nana.
Mr. Theotokoulos reached the end of his poem.
“Poop,” you agree?

Sam smiled, she laughed, she cheered, and she wondered what she’d say next.
