Hello, friends! How are you today? Did you have fun at school? I hope you made lots of new friends! Are you ready to read a story with me? Today, we have a special book called “Samsoon and Farewells” by Sunj Kim. Let’s begin!
Samsoon and Mimi were the best of friends. Every day, Mimi would greet Samsoon with a big smile and a wagging tail. In the spring, they watched Grandma pick yummy plants from the garden to make tasty vegetable soup. On weekends, Grandma would paint Samsoon’s nails with pretty flower colors.
In the summer, Mimi watched as Grandma and Samsoon enjoyed sweet yellow melons from the garden. They loved riding Grandma’s scooter to their favorite beach. In the fall, Grandma baked chestnuts and sweet potatoes. When winter came, she made warm dumplings and spicy rice cakes.
One spring day, Samsoon came home from school and couldn’t find Mimi. She looked everywhere, even in her bedroom and on the road to school.
“Grandma, where’s Mimi?” Samsoon asked.
“Mimi went back to her family,” Grandma said, as the flowers in the garden bloomed beautifully. Samsoon missed Mimi a lot. While cleaning, she found a drawing of Mimi and Grandma. She also found Mimi’s blanket in Grandma’s closet.
That night, Samsoon dreamed about collecting stones with Mimi and Grandma at the beach. The next day, Grandma made Samsoon’s favorite food, Korean sushi. Samsoon drew pictures of her happy memories with Mimi.
Samsoon asked Grandma, “How many more nights until I see Mimi again? Will it be 10 nights?”
Grandma hugged Samsoon and pointed to the sky. “Don’t be sad, Samsoon. There will be many goodbyes in life, just like with Mimi. But they are not forever. Look at the clouds,” Grandma said. “The clouds say hello and goodbye to everything as they move. We can say goodbye like the clouds, with a smile. Now, let’s go to the beach!”
And that was “Samsoon and Farewells.” I hope you liked the story! Saying goodbye can be hard, but it’s a part of life. Thank you for reading with us! See you next time. Take care and have fun with your family. Bye-bye!
Memory Drawing: Just like Samsoon drew pictures of her happy memories with Mimi, let’s create our own memory drawings! Think of a special friend or family member and draw a picture of a fun time you had together. Share your drawing with the class and tell us about your memory. This will help us remember that even when we say goodbye, the happy memories stay with us.
Cloud Watching: Just like Grandma talked about the clouds saying hello and goodbye, let’s go outside and look at the clouds. What shapes do you see? Do they remind you of anything? Imagine the clouds are saying goodbye to the sun as it sets. How does that make you feel? Share your thoughts with a friend or family member.
Goodbye and Hello Game: Practice saying goodbye and hello with a fun game! Pair up with a friend and take turns pretending to be the clouds. One person says goodbye with a smile, and the other says hello. Try using different voices or actions to make it fun. This will help us understand that goodbyes can be happy, just like the clouds moving in the sky.
Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

[Music] Hi everyone! Welcome back to the Storytime Family. How are you today? What’s going on with you? Did you have lots of fun at school? Have you been making lots of new friends? I hope you’ve had a good day and you’re ready to sit down and read with us. Today we have a book called “Samsoon and Farewells” by Sunj Kim. Let’s get started!
“Samsoon and Farewells”
Samsoon and Mimi were best friends. Mimi greeted Samsoon with a huge smile each day, wagging her tail. In springtime, Samsoon and Mimi watched their grandmother harvest various plants from their garden to make delicious vegetable soup, perfect for the sunny weather. On weekends, Grandma stained Samsoon’s nails with flower buds.
In summer, Mimi curiously watched Grandma and Samsoon enjoy delicious yellow melons from their garden. On weekends, Samsoon and Mimi rode on Grandma’s scooter to visit their favorite family beach. In autumn, Grandma baked chestnuts and sweet potatoes in their fireplace. Once winter arrived, Grandma prepared steaming dumplings and spicy rice cakes.
One spring afternoon, Samsoon returned from school and could not find Mimi. Samsoon looked inside her bedroom and the road to school but could not find Mimi anywhere.
“Grandma, where’s Mimi?” asked Samsoon.
“Mimi went back to her family,” Grandma replied, as the flowers outside Samsoon’s family garden continued to blossom. Samsoon missed Mimi. While cleaning, Samsoon found a drawing of Mimi and Grandma in her bedroom. As she cleaned some more, Samsoon discovered Mimi’s blanket inside Grandma’s closet.
That night in Samsoon’s dreams, Samsoon and Mimi collected stones like the past summers with Grandma at their favorite beach. The next day, Grandma started preparing Samsoon’s favorite food, Korean sushi. As Grandma cooked, Samsoon drew her favorite family memories with Mimi.
Samsoon turned towards Grandma with pained eyes. “Grandma, how many more nights will I have to sleep to meet Mimi again? Will it be 10 nights?”
Grandma hugged Samsoon and pointed to the cloudy sky outside her bedroom window. “Samsoon, do not be in pain. There will be many more departures in your life, just like your departure with Mimi. Rather than seeing each departure as permanent goodbyes, treat them as natural farewells. Look at the clouds,” exclaimed Grandma. “The clouds say hello and goodbye to each plant, tree, and bird while moving forward gracefully. Just like our clouds, we encounter each unique farewell gracefully. Now let’s go to the beach,” Grandma concluded cheerfully.
