In the lesson “Fun in the Sandbox!”, children are encouraged to play and use their imagination while learning about healthy eating. Neptune, a character in the story, initially wants to eat only cupcakes but learns the importance of a balanced diet through the “My Plate” concept, which includes various food groups essential for growth and health. The lesson emphasizes that while treats are okay in moderation, a diverse diet helps us feel great and stay active.
  1. What are some different foods we can eat to help our bodies grow strong?
  2. Why is it fun to play with friends in the sandbox?
  3. How can we use “My Plate” to choose healthy foods?

Fun in the Sandbox!

Hey there! Are you ready for some fun? Let’s take off our shoes and socks and jump into the sandbox! Playing with friends is the best, and it helps us learn and grow. Let’s use our imagination and have a great time together!

Neptune’s Big Announcement

Guess what? Our friend Neptune has something important to tell us. He says he’s not the same Neptune we know. What could it be?

Neptune says he wants to eat only cupcakes from now on! He thinks cupcakes are the perfect food because they’re yummy and colorful, just like a party!

Why We Need Different Foods

But wait! Our friend tells Neptune that it’s important to eat lots of different foods. Why? Because different foods help our bodies grow strong and healthy!

Meet “My Plate”

There’s a special plate called “My Plate” that shows us how to eat healthy. It has different sections for different kinds of food:

  • Green Section: This is for vegetables like cucumbers, peppers, and carrots. They help us stay strong!
  • Red Section: This is for fruits like apples and mangoes. They give us vitamins and make us feel good!
  • Orange Section: This is for grains like bread and oatmeal. They give us energy to play!
  • Purple Section: This is for proteins like beans and eggs. They help build our muscles!

A Special Treat

Neptune learns that there’s a little blue plate for special treats, like cupcakes! It’s okay to have a little sugar sometimes, but we need to eat other foods too.

Eating Right is Fun!

Neptune decides he won’t eat only cupcakes anymore. Eating lots of different foods helps us feel bright, grow tall, and sleep tight!

Remember, when we eat right, we feel great and can play with all our might! So let’s eat healthy and have fun!

Stay Curious!

Keep exploring and learning new things every day. Eating healthy is just one way to stay curious and strong!

  • What is your favorite food from each section of “My Plate,” and why do you like them? Can you think of a meal that includes something from each section?
  • If you could create a new section on “My Plate,” what would it be for, and what foods would you put in it? Why do you think those foods are important?
  • Imagine you are planning a picnic with Neptune. What healthy foods would you bring to make sure everyone has energy to play and feels great? How would you make the picnic fun and colorful?
  1. Colorful Plate Creation: Let’s make our own “My Plate” using paper plates and crayons! Draw and color the different sections: green for vegetables, red for fruits, orange for grains, purple for proteins, and a small blue section for treats. Can you think of your favorite food for each section and draw it on your plate?

  2. Food Group Hunt: Go on a food group hunt in your kitchen! With the help of an adult, find one item from each food group: vegetables, fruits, grains, proteins, and a treat. Arrange them on the table and talk about why each one is important for your body. Which one gives you energy to play? Which one helps you grow strong?

  3. Neptune’s Food Adventure Story: Imagine Neptune is going on a food adventure. What new foods will he try from each section of “My Plate”? Draw a picture or tell a story about Neptune’s adventure. How does he feel after trying all these different foods?

Our imagination, as long as we have the proper hydration, pushes the seed box to a great location. Playing gives us a solid foundation. It’s great to play with all your best friends! Come on in, take off your shoes and socks; it’s time for fun in the sandbox!

Guys, I have an important announcement to make.

What is it?

I am no longer the Neptune you know and love.

You finally started to appreciate naps! Aren’t they the best?

No, I still don’t like naps.

You’re not going to be incredibly friendly and kind anymore, like we’re used to?

I’m still going to be friendly and kind. I’m going to move out of the ocean into a swanky hotel.

Okay, fine, I’m still the same Neptune, but from now on, I eat only cupcakes.

The only snack you’re going to have from now on is cupcakes?

Yes, the only food of any kind I’m going to eat from now on is cupcakes.

Why cupcakes?

Because they’re the perfect food! They’re delicious, they’re yummy, we eat them during birthdays and celebrations, and I like celebrating. They come in many different colors, and they’re so easy to eat.

Apples are many different colors too—red, yellow, and green.

I’ve never heard of a happy birthday apple!

Apples are easy to eat, but with a cupcake, all you have to do is take off the wrapper. With an apple, you can even eat the peel, but I don’t like the peel.

You can take it off, but not as easily as with a cupcake. Nah, it’s a cupcake life for me!

Don’t you think you’ll get tired of just eating cupcakes?

Nope!

Maybe one way to think about your new plan is, have you ever eaten more than one cupcake in a day?

Yes, on my last birthday party, I had four cupcakes.

Good! So how did you like that?

My stomach really hurt, my teeth felt funny, and I had sticky frosting all over my flippers.

But you still want to eat only cupcakes?

I have made my decision, and you cannot convince me otherwise.

You know I like cupcakes too, but I heard it’s actually important to eat a lot of different kinds of foods.

Why is that?

Different foods have different nutrients that help the body grow and work the best way it can.

How do you know all that?

Because I love food! My mom got me this special plate called “my plate.” It’s got different sections with different colors for the types of food that are helpful to eat.

How many cupcakes could you fit on there?

Maybe five if you squish them!

See how this green section is the biggest? That’s actually for vegetables.

What kind of vegetables?

It can be any kind of vegetables you want! Raw green vegetables are my favorite, like cucumbers, peppers, and lettuce.

I like cucumbers, but I also like orange and red vegetables like squash, carrots, and sweet potatoes.

The red section is for fruits. Fruits also have vitamins, minerals, and fiber, which helps us digest our food.

What kind of fruits are good to eat?

Almost every kind! Different kinds of fruits have different vitamins in them.

Does mango count?

I don’t see why not!

What’s that orange section for?

That’s for grains like bread, brown rice, and oatmeal.

I like a nice piece of whole grain toast!

Well, oatmeal is actually not bad.

And what’s the purple section for?

That’s for high-protein foods like beans, meat, peas, eggs, nuts, and seeds. They help build the body and its tissue.

Okay, that’s all really great, but I have yet to hear a section for cupcakes!

And that, Neptune, is where this little blue plate comes in.

Oh, that’s the cupcake plate?

Well, sort of. It’s for anything you’d like to eat along with your meal. It could be a glass of chocolate milk or, in your case, maybe a cupcake. My mom says a little sugar now and then is A-Okay!

Okay, everybody, snack time is almost over!

But first, I have an important announcement: I will no longer be eating only cupcakes.

Are you sure? Cupcakes are great!

I’ve made my decision, and you cannot convince me otherwise.

Race you to the side!

I love eating all the healthy stuff, and what’s so cool about that? Mom’s always telling me if I eat greens, maybe I can grow tall!

When I eat right, I feel bright! So I eat right. When I eat right, I grow tall! So I eat right. When I eat right, I sleep tight! So I eat right. When I eat right, I give all my might! So I eat right; it’s a delight!
