In this lesson, Squeaks shares his adventures exploring the beach, highlighting the importance of using our senses to appreciate the environment. He learns about the formation of sand, the diversity of ocean life, the science behind waves and tides, and even creates his own imaginative sea monster inspired by ancient creatures. The lesson emphasizes the wonders of the ocean, encouraging curiosity and appreciation for marine ecosystems.
  1. What are some things Squeaks used his senses to notice at the beach?
  2. Why do you think the ocean is salty, and where does the salt come from?
  3. Can you name one ocean animal and something special about it that you learned from Squeaks’ adventure?

Exploring the Beach with Squeaks

Hey there! Squeaks just got back from an exciting vacation to California, and he had a blast exploring the beach. He even brought back some cool stories and pictures to share!

Using Our Senses at the Beach

When Squeaks first arrived at the beach, he used all his senses. He heard the loud crashing waves and smelled the fresh sea air. The sand felt soft under his wheels, even though it’s made from tiny pieces of rock. Isn’t it amazing how the waves break down rocks into smooth sand?

Building Sandcastles and Swimming

Squeaks had fun building sandcastles, but the ocean waves eventually knocked them down. That’s okay because it meant he could build another one! When he swam in the ocean, he noticed the water was cold and salty. Did you know the salt in the ocean comes from rocks? Rainwater breaks off tiny pieces of rocks, which wash into rivers and eventually reach the ocean, making it salty.

Discovering Ocean Life

The ocean is home to many animals, from dolphins and whales to tiny creatures called plankton. Plankton are so small you need a microscope to see them, but they’re super important. Some plankton make oxygen, and others are food for bigger ocean animals. Even the largest animal on Earth, the blue whale, eats tiny plankton called krill!

Understanding Waves and Tides

Waves are created by wind and the moon’s gravity. The moon’s pull causes tides, making the water rise and fall on the beach. Sometimes, the waves can be huge, like tsunamis, which are caused by underwater earthquakes or volcanoes.

Imagining Sea Monsters

Squeaks got inspired by his trip and decided to design his own sea monster! He learned about ancient ocean creatures like plesiosaurs and mosasaurs, which had flippers and long tails. He also discovered Dunkleosteus, a fish with bony armor, and Megalodon, a giant shark with sharp teeth. Using these ideas, Squeaks created a fantastic sea monster with flippers, a strong tail, armor, and serrated teeth!

The Amazing Blue Whale

Even though Squeaks’ sea monster is cool, the real blue whale is even more incredible. Blue whales are the largest animals ever, growing over 30 meters long. They eat tons of tiny krill every day and communicate with each other through beautiful songs that can be heard miles away.

Isn’t it fascinating how much there is to learn about the ocean and its creatures? Next time you visit the beach, think about all the amazing things happening in the water!

  • What do you think it would be like to visit the beach like Squeaks did? Can you imagine the sounds, smells, and things you might see there?
  • Have you ever built a sandcastle or played in the sand? What was your favorite part about it, and how did it feel when the waves washed it away?
  • If you could create your own sea monster like Squeaks, what would it look like? What special features would it have, and why?
  1. Beach Sensory Exploration: Next time you visit a beach or a sandbox, use your senses just like Squeaks did! Feel the sand with your hands or feet and describe how it feels. Listen to the sounds around you, like the waves or the wind. What do you smell? Try drawing or writing about your sensory experience. How does it compare to Squeaks’ adventure?
  2. Build Your Own Sandcastle: Gather some sand, a bucket, and water to build your own sandcastle. Observe what happens when you add water to the sand. Does it help you build better structures? After building, watch what happens when you pour water over your sandcastle. Discuss why the ocean waves might knock down sandcastles and how you can rebuild them.
  3. Create a Sea Creature: Use clay, playdough, or paper to design your own sea creature inspired by Squeaks’ sea monster. Think about what features your creature might have, like flippers, a tail, or sharp teeth. Share your creation with a friend or family member and explain why you chose those features. How does your creature survive in the ocean?
