Scratching the Surface: Adjust Block Language and Contrast

Did you know that you can make the Scratch Project Editor look and feel just right for you? It’s like giving your Scratch workspace a little makeover! Let’s learn how you can change the colors and language to make it easier and more fun to use.

Changing the Color Contrast

Sometimes, changing the colors can make things easier to see. In Scratch, you can adjust the color contrast of the blocks. Here’s how:

  • Go to the “Settings” menu.
  • Look for “Color Mode.”
  • You can choose between “Original” or “High Contrast” mode.

High contrast mode makes the blocks stand out more, which can be helpful for some people. You can switch back and forth between these modes anytime you like!

Changing the Language

Scratch is used by people all over the world, so it can speak many languages! If you want to change the language of the blocks and menus, follow these steps:

  • Go to the “Settings” menu.
  • Find “Language.”
  • Select your preferred language from the list.

Thanks to amazing volunteers, Scratch is available in over 75 languages! Isn’t that cool?

Fun Fact

Did you know that Scratch is named after a technique used by DJs? Just like DJs mix music, you can mix and match blocks to create your own projects!

Now that you know how to customize your Scratch Editor, go ahead and try it out. Have fun exploring and creating your own Scratch projects!

  • Have you ever changed the colors or language of something you use, like a game or a device? How did it make you feel, and did it make using it more fun or easier?
  • Why do you think having different color contrasts and languages in Scratch might be important for people around the world? Can you think of a situation where this might be helpful?
  • If you could add a new feature to Scratch to make it even more fun or easier to use, what would it be and why?
  1. Color Contrast Exploration: At home or in the classroom, find different colored papers or objects. Arrange them in pairs and observe which combinations are easier to see and why. Discuss with your friends or family how changing colors can help make things clearer. Try to relate this to how changing the color contrast in Scratch can help you see the blocks better.

  2. Language Adventure: Pick a simple sentence or phrase and learn how to say it in three different languages. Share your new language skills with your classmates or family. Discuss how being able to change the language in Scratch can help people from different parts of the world use it more easily. Can you think of other places where changing the language might be helpful?

  3. Scratch DJ Challenge: Just like DJs mix music, try mixing different Scratch blocks to create a simple project. Use the high contrast mode to see if it helps you arrange your blocks better. Share your project with a friend and explain how changing the contrast helped you. Can you think of other situations where mixing things up, like colors or languages, can make something more fun or easier to use?
