Hello, friends! I’m Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids Team, and I’m thrilled to have you join us today. My friend Sophie is here too. Hi, Sophie!
Today, we’re diving into a story about some ocean friends. The book is called “Hold On” by Cynthia Platt. It’s all about a Seahorse who loves living in the ocean among rocks and coral. Seahorse’s best friend is Jellyfish, who loves to float around. But Seahorse is a bit scared of floating.
One day, a big storm hit the ocean. Seahorse held on tightly to some kelp to stay safe. But Jellyfish was in trouble, getting carried away by the rough seas. Seahorse knew he had to help, even though he was scared. He bravely let go of his safe spot and grabbed Jellyfish’s tentacles. Together, they held on to the coral until the storm passed.
After the storm, Seahorse felt proud of his bravery. He decided to try floating with Jellyfish, and it wasn’t so scary anymore. They floated and danced together in the sea. This story teaches us about being brave and helping friends, even when we’re scared.
We also did some activities to understand the story better. At first, Seahorse was terrified of floating, but by the end, he was excited to try it. Jellyfish wasn’t scared after the storm, showing how friends can help each other feel safe.
We read another book about coral reefs, which are colorful underwater homes for many plants and animals. Coral reefs have warm water, and lots of fish and creatures live there. We learned about how these animals help each other survive.
Our friend Asher showed us some cool seashells and sea rocks he found. It was a fun way to see what treasures the ocean can hold.
We’ve had a great time learning and exploring the ocean today. Thanks for joining us, and we’ll see you next time. Goodbye from Caroline, Sophie, and the Khan Academy Kids Team!
Seahorse and Jellyfish Role Play: Gather some friends or family members and act out the story of Seahorse and Jellyfish. Use blankets or scarves as the ocean waves and pretend to be the characters. How does it feel to be brave like Seahorse? What would you do to help a friend in need?
Create Your Own Coral Reef: Use colored paper, markers, and other craft materials to make a coral reef scene. Include different sea creatures like seahorses, jellyfish, and fish. Think about how these animals might help each other in the ocean. Share your creation with someone and explain how the animals work together.
Bravery Journal: Start a bravery journal where you can draw or write about a time you were brave. It could be something small, like trying a new food, or something big, like helping a friend. How did it feel to be brave? What did you learn from the experience?
