In this lesson, Chris, the Word Whiz, introduces the concept of silent letters—letters in words that are not pronounced. Through engaging examples, such as the silent “k” in “knight,” the silent “h” in “honest,” the silent “b” in “thumb,” and the silent “w” in “wrap,” learners are encouraged to identify and practice recognizing these sneaky letters in various words. The lesson emphasizes the importance of being aware of silent letters to enhance reading skills and invites participants to share their own examples.
  1. What is a silent letter?
  2. Can you name a word that has a silent “k” in it?
  3. Why do you think silent letters like to hide in words?

Welcome to the World of Silent Letters!

Hello, friends! I’m Chris, the Word Whiz, and today we’re going on a fun adventure to learn about words with silent letters. Are you ready? Let’s put on our thinking caps and dive in!

What Are Silent Letters?

Silent letters are letters in a word that we don’t say out loud. They are sneaky and like to hide! Let’s look at some examples to see how they work.

Meet the Silent “K”

Have you ever seen the word “knight”? It starts with a “k,” but we don’t say the “k” sound. It’s like the “k” is taking a nap! Here are two more words with a silent “k”: “knock” and “knob.” Remember, we don’t say the “k” in these words either.

Tricky Silent “H”

Now, let’s talk about the word “honest.” The “h” is silent, so we don’t say it. It’s the same with the word “ghost.” Even though the “h” is in the middle, we still don’t say it. These words like to play tricks on us!

The Sneaky Silent “B”

Next up is the silent “b.” In words like “thumb” and “climb,” the “b” is quiet. It’s there, but we don’t hear it. Isn’t that interesting?

Watch Out for the Silent “W”

Finally, let’s look at the silent “w.” In the words “answer” and “wrap,” the “w” doesn’t make a sound. It’s like it’s hiding behind the other letters!

Time to Practice!

Okay, let’s see if you can spot the silent letters. Look at this word: “not.” Can you guess which letter is silent? That’s right, the “k” is silent!

Here’s another one: “comb.” Which letter is silent? You got it, the “b” is silent!

One more: “right.” Can you find the silent letter? Great job! The “gh” is silent.

Keep an Eye Out for Silent Letters!

There are lots of words with silent letters, but now you know how to spot them. Don’t let them trick you when you’re reading. What other silent letter words can you think of? Share them with me!

Thanks for learning with me today. See you next time for more word fun!

  1. Silent Letter Hunt: Go on a silent letter hunt around your home or classroom. Look for books, magazines, or signs that have words with silent letters. Write down the words you find and circle the silent letters. Share your list with a friend or family member and see if they can spot the silent letters too!

  2. Silent Letter Art: Create a piece of art that includes words with silent letters. Use colorful markers or crayons to write words like “knight,” “ghost,” and “thumb” on a large piece of paper. Decorate each word with drawings that represent the word’s meaning. For example, draw a knight next to the word “knight.” Display your artwork to remind you of the sneaky silent letters!

  3. Story Time Challenge: Write a short story using at least five words with silent letters. You can write about anything you like, such as a knight on an adventure or a ghost in a haunted house. Read your story aloud to a friend or family member and see if they can identify the silent letters in your story.

Hello! It’s Chris, the Word Whiz, here with my super cool knight armor. Today, we’ll learn how to read words with silent letters.

Take a look at the word “night.” Do you notice anything unusual about it? Usually, we start figuring out a word by looking at the beginning letter, but that doesn’t work here. This word breaks the rules; it’s a “jail word.” Words like this, with a silent letter, can be very tricky.

Let’s look at some more rule breakers. Here are two more words that begin with a silent “k”: “knock” and “knob.” We do not pronounce the “k” at the beginning of these words, just like we do not pronounce the “k” at the beginning of “night.” These words break the rules, so I’ll send them to the word jail too.

There are other words that try to trick you as well. Check these out: in the word “honest,” we do not pronounce the “h” at the beginning. In the word “ghost,” the “h” is not at the beginning of the word, but we still do not pronounce the “h” sound.

Now let’s look at some silent “b” words. In the words “thumb” and “climb,” the “b” is silent.

The last silent letter we will look at today is the silent “w,” as in “answer” and “wrap.” Again, these words are tricky; they don’t follow the rules because we do not pronounce the “w” sound in either word. These are jail words too.

Okay, are you ready to show what you know about those tricky silent letter words? Look at this word. Can you guess which letter is silent?

[Music]

That’s right! The “k” is silent. This is the word “not.”

Here’s another one. Are you ready? Check this word out. Can you guess the silent letter?

[Music]

You bet! That word has a silent “b.” It is the word “comb.”

[Music]

One more! Don’t get tricked. Can you find the silent letter in this word?

Awesome job! There is no fooling you. This is the word “right.”

Wow, there sure are a lot of tricky silent letter words! Good thing you have me around to throw these rule breakers into the word jail. Don’t let them trick you when you are out there reading.
