Welcome to Storytime with Ryan!

Hello, friends! I’m Ryan, and today we’re going to have a fun storytime together. We’re going to read a book called “Skippy Jon Jones” by Judy Schachner. Are you ready? Let’s dive into the adventure!

Meet Skippy Jon Jones

Every morning, a little cat named Skippy Jon Jones wakes up with the birds. His mom, Mama Junebug Jones, isn’t too happy about that. She tells Skippy, “You need to remember you’re a cat, not a bird or a mouse or anything else!”

Skippy’s mom wants him to think about what it means to be a Siamese cat. But Skippy has other ideas!

Skippy’s Big Adventure

When Skippy is alone, he loves to bounce on his bed. “I’m Skippy Jon Jones, and I bounce on my bed!” he sings. One day, while bouncing, he sees himself in the mirror and thinks, “Wow, I look like a chihuahua!”

Skippy decides to pretend he’s a brave swordfighter. He puts on a mask and grabs a toy sword. “I’m Skippy, the great swordfighter!” he says.

Off to Mexico!

In his imagination, Skippy travels to a faraway place called Old Mexico. There, he meets a group of tiny dogs called chihuahuas. They call themselves “the most chimichangas!”

Skippy introduces himself as a great swordfighter. The chihuahuas are excited and think he might be the hero they’ve been waiting for!

A Secret Password

The chihuahuas tell Skippy there’s a secret password. Skippy whispers it into their ears, “Achoo!” The chihuahuas cheer, “Yay! Skippy is here to save the day!”

They have a big party called a fiesta, and then they take a nap, which is called a siesta. After their nap, they get ready for an adventure!

Back Home

Meanwhile, back at home, Skippy’s room is making a lot of noise. His mom and sisters rush to see what’s happening. They find Skippy with a piñata on his head and candy everywhere!

“Skippy Jon Jones!” they all shout. Skippy’s mom gives him a big hug and lots of kisses. “What am I going to do with you?” she laughs.

Time for Bed

That night, when it’s time to sleep, Skippy can’t help but bounce on his bed again. “I’m Skippy Jon Jones, and I bounce on my bed!” he sings happily.

And that’s the end of Skippy’s exciting day. I hope you enjoyed the story as much as I did!

  1. Skippy Jon Jones loves to use his imagination and pretend to be different things. What are some things you like to pretend to be, and why?
  2. Skippy’s mom wants him to remember he’s a Siamese cat, but Skippy likes to imagine he’s a chihuahua. Have you ever wanted to be something different from what you are? What was it, and what made it exciting?
  3. In the story, Skippy goes on an adventure in his imagination. If you could go on an adventure anywhere in the world, real or imaginary, where would you go and what would you do?
  1. Imagination Adventure: Just like Skippy Jon Jones, let’s use our imagination to become something else for a day! Ask the children to think about what animal or character they would like to pretend to be. Encourage them to draw a picture of themselves as that character and share a short story about an adventure they might have. This activity helps children explore creativity and storytelling.

  2. Mirror, Mirror: Skippy saw himself in the mirror and imagined he was a chihuahua. Set up a small mirror station and let each child take turns looking at themselves. Ask them to describe what they see and then imagine what else they could be. This activity encourages self-reflection and imaginative thinking.

  3. Secret Password Game: Just like Skippy had a secret password, let’s create our own! Have the children come up with a fun, silly password and use it to enter a pretend “secret club” in the classroom. They can use the password to share a special handshake or dance. This activity promotes teamwork and communication skills.

“Skippy Jon Jones” by Judy Schachner

Every morning, Skippy Jon Jones woke up with the birds, and this did not please his mother. “Get yourself down here right now, Mr. Kitten Britches,” ordered Mama Junebug Jones. “No self-respecting cat ever slept with a flock of birds,” she scolded. The lecture went on and on as usual. “You’ve got to do some serious thinking before you leave this room, Mr. Fuzzy Pants,” said his mother, “about just what it means to be a cat—not a bird, not a mouse, not a moose or goose, not a rat or a bat. You need to think about just what it means to be a Siamese cat and stay out of your closet,” she added, closing the bedroom door.

Got it? Be a cat, stay out of the closet. Simple!

But once he was alone, Skippy Jon Jones began to bounce on his big-boy bed. “Oh, I’m Skippy Jon Jones, and I bounce on my bed!” On his way down to earth from a gigantic bounce, Skippy Jon Jones shot past his bedroom mirror. “Holy guacamole!” exclaimed Skippy Jon Jones. “What was that?” So up he went again and again. Then, using his very best Spanish accent, he said, “My ears are too big for my head, my head is too big for my body. I’m not the same old cat; I am a chihuahua!”

Back on land, Skippy Jon Jones climbed into his toy box and rifled through some of his old junk. After he put on his mask and sword and climbed onto his mouse, Skippy Jon Jones began to sing in a very soft voice, “My name is Skippy, the great swordfighter!”

Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Jujubee, Jezebel, and Jill E. Boo Jones were helping Mama Junebug Jones make lunch. “Kids, Skippy Jon, come out of his room now!” “No,” answered Mama Junebug Jones. Mr. Fluffernutter is still thinking. In fact, Skippy Jon wasn’t thinking about being a Siamese cat at all. With a walk into his closet, his thoughts took him down a lonesome desert road, far, far away in Old Mexico.

Not long into his journey, a mysterious band of chihuahuas appeared out of the dust. “¡Ay caramba! Who goes there?” asked Skippy Jon Jones. “We go by the name of the most chimichangas!” growled Don Diego, the biggest of the small ones. “Who are you?” “I’m Skippy, the great swordfighter,” said Skippy Jon Jones. Then the smallest of the small ones spoke up, “Why the mosquito, dude?” “I go incognito,” said Skippy Jon. “Do you like rice and beans?” “I like rice and beans!” said Skippy Jon.

“He might be the dog of our dreams,” whispered Rosalita. “If he knows the secret password…” “Ooh, secret password! I wonder what it is!”

Then, leaning toward Don Diego, Skippy half sneezed, half spoke the secret password into the chihuahuas’ very large ear. “Achoo!” “Bless you,” said Don Diego. “Gracias,” said Skippy. “Then it is true!” decreed Don Diego. “Yippy, yippy! Skippy is here; we have nothing to fear!”

And so, all of the chimichangas went crazy! First, they had a fiesta, then they took a siesta. After waking up, the chimichangas got down to serious business. Using his paw, Don Diego drew a picture in the sand of the great bumblebee bandito.

Then all the doggies burst into song: “Yippy, yippy! Our hero is an escapee! He’s a dog about a dame who delivered the beans, and now he can make her burritos!”

But back at home, there was such a ruckus coming from Skippy Jon’s room that Mama Junebug Jones and the girls just had to find out what was going on. They raced down the hall to the kitty boy’s room just in time to see Skippy Jon’s closet exploding! Then out flew candy, beanbag doggies, and the kitty boy with his birthday piñata on his head.

“Skippy Jon Jones!” everyone cried. “Hola, muchachas!” he said in a very soft voice. Mama Junebug Jones lifted up Skippy Jon and covered his head with furry kisses. “What am I gonna do with you, Mr. Cocoa Pug?” she scolded.

That night, when he was supposed to be going to sleep, Skippy Jon began to bounce on his big-boy bed. “Oh well, I’m Skippy Jon Jones, and I bounce on my bed!”

I hope you enjoy the story!
