Hi there! I’m Paul from the Khan Academy Kids team. It’s awesome to have you here with us for Circle Time. This is a fun place where we read books, play games, and do exciting activities. Today, I’m joined by my friend Sophie. Say hi, Sophie!
Hi, everyone! I’m thrilled to be back on Circle Time and see all of you. Some of our friends are feeling happy, excited, and energetic, while others might be a bit sleepy. No matter how you’re feeling, we’re excited to share story time, activities, and show and tell with you today!
Today, we’re reading a book called “Snow Day” by Cynthia Platt. It’s getting chilly where we are, so I’ve got my jacket on to stay warm. Let’s dive into the story!
There was a storm last night, and everything was covered in snow. Raya and Ollo saw the snow falling from the sky. “I know a great way to spend our snow day,” Ollo said. “What is it?” Raya asked. They bundled up in warm clothes to stay cozy in the snow.
Ollo suggested they go sledding. Raya was a bit scared, worried she might crash into a tree or rock. Ollo assured her she could steer around them. Raya wanted to try something new but also wanted to stay safe.
Ollo offered to help Raya learn how to sled by starting on a small hill. They walked down the hill first to see what it was like. It didn’t seem so steep after all. Raya agreed to try sledding with Ollo, and they had a blast!
Raya was excited after conquering her fear of sledding. Ollo was a helpful friend, guiding her step-by-step until she felt confident. It’s important to help friends overcome their fears, just like Ollo did for Raya.
For Show and Tell, our friend Benning sent us a video of learning to sled for the first time. Benning got a little help, just like Raya. It looked like so much fun!
Another friend, Naomi, showed us how she used her imagination to play in “snow” made from packing material. Even if there’s no real snow, you can still have fun by being creative!
Did you know that while some places experience winter, others have summer at the same time? Our friend Lukey drew a map to help us understand this. In the Northern Hemisphere, it’s winter, while in the Southern Hemisphere, like Australia, it’s summer.
Today, we learned that no matter the season, it’s great to help a friend learn something new and overcome fears. One friend shared how they help a friend who is scared of swimming by sitting by the pool and encouraging them.
Remember, even if you’re not scared of something, someone else might be. It’s a chance to help them learn and grow.
That’s all for today on Circle Time. Thanks for joining us! We can’t wait to see you next time. Bye from me, Sophie, and all our friends at Circle Time and Khan Academy Kids!
Snow Day Adventure: Create your own “snow” at home using cotton balls or shredded paper. Pretend it’s a snowy day and think of fun activities you can do. Can you build a snowman or make snow angels? Share your adventure with a family member or friend and ask them to join in the fun!
Map the Seasons: Draw a simple map of the world and color the Northern Hemisphere in blue for winter and the Southern Hemisphere in yellow for summer. Discuss with a parent or teacher why different parts of the world have different seasons at the same time. Can you find out what season it is in a country like Australia right now?
Overcoming Fears Role Play: Pair up with a friend or family member and take turns acting out a situation where one of you is scared to try something new, like sledding or swimming. The other person can play the role of a supportive friend, just like Ollo. Talk about how it feels to help someone and to be helped.
