Hello, friends! Today, we’re going on a fun adventure with a story called “Snappsy the Alligator (Did Not Ask to Be in This Book)” by Julie Falatko. The pictures are by Tim Miller. Let’s dive into Snappsy’s world!
Snappsy is an alligator who wasn’t feeling quite right. His feet felt heavy, his skin felt loose, and his tail wouldn’t swish around. Even his big jaw wouldn’t SNAP! Snappsy was just really hungry and wanted some food.
Snappsy went on a journey to find something to eat. He walked by the pond, climbed a big hill, and went through the forest. He liked to eat tiny birds and soft bunnies, but today he went to the grocery store instead!
At the store, Snappsy filled his cart with yummy things like pudding, peanut butter, pita bread, and popcorn. He also got cheddar cheese, apples, pretzels, pasta, and pears. Snappsy sure loved his snacks!
Snappsy carried his groceries back home through the forest and down the hill. He was ready to enjoy his food. Inside his house, he made a peanut butter sandwich and read a book. But then, he had an idea!
Snappsy decided to throw a party! He wanted to have fun with his friends. He cleaned up his house and made goody bags for everyone. Snappsy was excited to have a great time with his guests.
Snappsy’s party was colorful and fun. There were streamers, cheese cubes, and a big bowl of punch. Music played, and soon Snappsy’s friends arrived. They laughed, danced, and had a blast!
Even the narrator of the story joined in the fun. Everyone enjoyed pudding and danced the Chicken Dance. It was such a great party that everyone hoped Snappsy would throw more parties soon!

Welcome to Storyline Online, brought to you by the SAG-AFTRA Foundation. My name is David Harbour, and today I will be reading “Snappsy the Alligator (Did Not Ask to Be in This Book)” by Julie Falatko, with pictures by Tim Miller.
Snappsy the alligator wasn’t feeling like himself. His feet felt draggy. His skin felt baggy. His tail wouldn’t swish this way and that. And, worst of all, his big jaw wouldn’t SNAP. “This is terrible! I’m just hungry! Why is this narrator trying to make it seem like I need a nap?” So Snappsy went off in search of food. He walked along the edge of the pond. He scooted up the tall hill. He shimmied through the forest. “You’re just describing what you see in the illustrations.”
Snappsy, the big alligator, kept looking for food. He liked to eat tiny birds and soft bunnies. He prowled through the forest when he came to a— “It’s just a grocery store! It’s where I buy my food.” Snappsy looked hungrily at the other shoppers while loading his cart with pudding, peanut butter, pita bread, and popcorn. Yes, Snappsy the alligator was particularly fond of a certain letter of the alphabet. “I don’t only eat food that starts with the letter P. I’m also buying cheddar, apples, pretzels, pasta, pears—” “It’s just a coincidence!”
Snappsy carried his groceries back through the forest, down the hill, and around the pond until he got to his house. “Oh, you are really cheesing me off. It’s my house. I built it myself.” Snappsy took his groceries into his shed and slammed the door. What was he doing in there? Was he making plans? Was he roasting forest creatures? Had he fallen asleep? “I made a peanut butter sandwich and now I’m reading a book.” “Well, you have to come out. The story is really boring now.” “If you must know, I’m planning a party.”
Snappsy decided to throw a party to better his reputation with the other animals. He vacuumed the rug and made goody bags for his guests. “You know what? I did not ask to be in this book! I was just having a normal day! And suddenly you were talking about what I was doing, so I’m throwing a party to make things more interesting! I hope you’re happy! Now I just want you to buzz off!” “Thank you.” “Oh, go ahead! I can hear you breathing!”
Snappsy’s party was shaping up to be quite festive. Colorful streamers hung from the ceiling. There were cubes of cheese and a bowl of punch. Some danceable music was playing. Then Snappsy’s friends started to arrive. They were laughing and dancing. They looked like they were having a great time. “Oh, all right! You can come in!” “Oh gosh. Me?! The humble narrator? Well, I suppose I could come for an hour or two. Someone has to demonstrate proper dance steps.”
All the important guests had finally arrived. And while Snappsy’s sharp teeth were still glinting, he was actually a lovely host. “Does anyone want pudding?” “Because pudding is really good.” And we all ate pudding and did the Chicken Dance. We were really looking forward to Snappsy throwing parties like this every week.
The end.
I love reading. Books are an amazing way to explore different perspectives and experiences. When we read, we can feel connected to others and realize that we share many of the same feelings. It’s a wonderful thing to feel part of something larger than ourselves. Unlike movies and TV, books allow us to use our imagination to cast the characters in our minds.
