The lesson “Social Emotional Learning for Kids: I Am” emphasizes the importance of recognizing and understanding a wide range of feelings, such as happiness, sadness, curiosity, and fear. It encourages children to explore their emotions and reassures them that all feelings are valid, highlighting the significance of love and self-acceptance. Additionally, the lesson promotes reading as a way to learn more about emotions through engaging stories.
  1. What makes you feel happy and excited?
  2. Can you think of a time when you felt sad or worried?
  3. What is something new you want to try, even if it feels a little scary?

Social Emotional Learning for Kids: I Am

Feelings Are Important

We all have different feelings, and that’s okay! Let’s talk about some of them:

Happy and Excited

Sometimes we feel happy and excited, like when we play our favorite games or see our friends.

Sad and Worried

Other times, we might feel sad or worried, like when we miss someone or have a big day coming up.

Curious and Brave

Being curious is when we want to learn new things, and being brave is when we try something new, even if it’s a little scary.

Shy and Silly

We can feel shy when meeting new people, or silly when we make funny faces and laugh a lot.

Bored and Thoughtful

Feeling bored happens when we don’t know what to do, and being thoughtful is when we think about others and how they feel.

Afraid and Frustrated

Sometimes we feel afraid of things like the dark, and frustrated when something is hard to do.

Proud and Angry

We feel proud when we do something great, and angry when something isn’t fair.

Loved

Most importantly, we are all loved, and that makes all our feelings okay!

Explore Stories

There are so many fun stories to read! One of my favorites is about a unicorn and a horse. The horse learns that he is beautiful just the way he is. You can find lots of stories like this at the library or in a book app. Ask your grown-up to help you explore more stories. You’ll have so much fun!

Keep Learning

Thanks for learning with me! Remember, there are always more stories to discover. Happy reading!

  • Can you think of a time when you felt really happy or excited? What were you doing, and who were you with?
  • Have you ever felt shy or silly? What happened, and how did you feel afterward?
  • What is something new you would like to try, even if it feels a little scary? How can being brave help you?
  1. Feelings Collage: Gather some old magazines, newspapers, or printed images. With the help of a grown-up, cut out pictures that show different emotions like happy, sad, excited, or angry. Create a collage by gluing these pictures onto a large piece of paper. Talk about each picture and what feeling it represents. Can you think of a time when you felt that way?

  2. Emotion Charades: Play a game of charades with your friends or family. Take turns acting out different emotions without using words, and see if others can guess the feeling. You can use feelings like curious, brave, shy, or silly. After each round, share a story about a time you felt that emotion.

  3. Feelings Journal: Start a feelings journal where you draw or write about how you feel each day. Use colors to show your emotions, like yellow for happy or blue for sad. At the end of the week, look back at your journal and talk about what made you feel each way. What can you do to feel happy or brave more often?

Here’s a sanitized version of the YouTube transcript:

The Free Library is full of storybooks brought to life. My favorite story is about the unicorn and the horse because the horse feels like he’s not beautiful, but he actually is. I’m going to explore more books, and you should too! Don’t wait around—ask your grown-up and start exploring more fun stories like these. You’ll be glad you did!
